Not really. Very few plants can survive for long in just a bowl of water. There is insufficient oxygen for the roots to thrive........very similar to planting a tree in a pond. Just not gonna work 95% of the time!!

btw, bagged soils are not bad - just not ideal. Many folks grow very successfully in bagged potting soils as long as drainage is good in the container and one is careful not to overwater. Certainly a far more desirable environment than placing a plant in a bowl of water. You will wind up drowning the plant. And the gritty mix is less suitable to these plants than is the 5-1-1 if you are making up your own potting soil.

slide it back into the pot.. and stop watering it ... presuming the pot has drain holes.. though i suspect not ...

where are you ... do you have any quality nursery around you ... you might just carry it in.. and ask them to repot it for you .. call ahead ..

the gritty mix recipes... unfortunately.. are for huge amounts... you really dont need to go to that extreme unless you need a lot ...

get a bag of media... fill the new pot twice ...... dampen the media ... repot in a slightly bigger pot ... just enough water to settle it in .. and then dont water it again .. until your finger.. inserted an inch.. tells you the media is drying ... the pot should also weigh less ...

you are very concerned about media... but the bigger problem is your watering can ... it appears to have no self control ... lol ...

Nikki, millions of people have successfully grown plants in potting soil straight out of the bag. No need whatsoever for you to make a "gritty mix". I strongly suggest that you do a little more research before doing something that can cause more harm to your plants.
