Bosnian Pole Bean?

last modified: 10 years ago

I received seeds for a (short-ish) pole bean several years back in a trade, labelled simply "Bosnian". I have grown it for a couple years now and love it, I use it as a shelly mainly, or a dry bean. This past year, I was going to grow it out to replace my seed, and the rabbits got every single stalk. I didn't get any beans to eat, and certainly none to save and I find myself all out of stock (clearly bad planning on my part). I wonder if anyone has any to trade? I am in Canada, but the Canadian trading forum is pretty empty so I thought I would ask here. (I don't know where the trade lists have gone that we used to have on gardenweb??) Or alternatively, if anyone happens to know of any Canadian sources to buy this bean. My usual seed-ordering sources don't seem to have it. Thank you so much for any help!! This bean was one of my favourites and I hope I haven't lost it!

(also while I'm posting, I'd love to trade for seeds for the Giant Red Tarka bean as well, if anyone has any to trade ... especially anyone in canada?) :)

Cziga, is this the one you are looking for?

    Freshly shelled seed
The seed color changes as it ages

I grew this one last year so I have fresh seed I could send. I may still have your addy if you are in the same place, if not you will need to message me with your new one. By the way did that cutting of Omoshiro I sent you make it, mine is still a wimpy vine so cut it right back to see if I can't force some new growth from the root.

That does look very similar to the bean I had, is it called "Bosnian"?

lol, the Omoshiro cutting had blossomed into a beautiful clematis. Let me look, I might have a photo somewhere. Really came into it's own last year, finally :) I was so happy with it, I really love that one. Unfortunately, I had to move that entire garden area in early fall (out of my control), so it pouted for the rest of the year. But I'm pretty sure it survived so if it gets through this winter (fingers crossed), I'll just prune it back in Spring and start growing it up the obelisk again.

If you don't find them elsewhere, let me know, I have Giant Red Tarka and can send you a few.

these photos are actually from the summer before last ... when it was just starting to grow ... I spent the entire first year trimming back all vines short, they say that if you keep cutting it back it will grow more roots/vines from the base, and I did find that to be the case. Hopefully cutting it back this Spring will encourage it to grow again. The colour in the second photo is harder to see but I love the the tips are tinged in dusky pink, and the flowers open even darker and then fade as they age. Really cool!

and it didn't just survive being rooted in water, but also being shipped across the country and then replanted in a completely different climate than BC lol.

About the Bosnian pole bean, I would love some seeds if you have extras. I am building a fence this year to keep bunnies out of my vegetable gardens as they have become a huge problem, not just for the beans. Is there anything you are looking for, seed-wise? I have no idea how to make a trade page on this new Houzz site ... although some people have them so I'm sure there is a way. I do have a variety of vegetable seeds, and flowers, to trade ... I can email you a list, or if you let me know if there is anything specific that I might have? Thank you so much!!

fusion_power ... I'd love the Giant Red Tarka seeds, if you have some to spare. I've always wanted to try those ones :) Again, I'm not yet sure how to show my trade page, but I can send you a list of what I have to trade, or if there is anything in particular you are looking for, I can check to see if I have it :)

Well, that's rubbing salt into the wound, my 'Omoshiro' has never looked as good as that, hopefully I've shocked it into doing something other than sulk. I don't have a problem with any of the other ones I have.

I take it your addy is the same? If so I'll get the beans in the mail on Monday, no need for a trade right now, maybe hit you up for something later on.

Your trade page is up, just hit on your profile.

Those are two very productive beans for shelly or dry... and I love the flavor of Bosnian Pole snaps, despite their relatively short length. Glad to see that Giant Red Tarka is now available commercially in Canada. I too could offer seed for both, but it seems they are already in good hands. :-) I need to replenish my own stock of Bosnian Pole this year, should conditions allow.

Annette, I had never heard of that online nursery you mentioned but will definitely be taking a look for other things there as well ... always great to find more good online sources :)

My address is the same (I'm impressed you still have it!!) ... thank you very much for the beans, it means a lot! I'll try and get a trade list up tonight, at least in part, in case you see something that you'd like in return. I'd love to be able to give you something back :) I did FIND my trade list, the same from from several years ago, but haven't been able to figure out how to EDIT it yet ... learning a new website is apparently quite difficult for me!

Zeedman - thank you! I'm fairly sure I heard about both of these beans from you (on this forum) in the first place lol! I really liked the Bosnian pole bean and I also found it very productive and tasty. I'm looking forward to Giant Red Tarka, if I can get it, as I've heard lots of good things ... again, probably mostly from you! I've learned so much about various beans in this forum, I'm not sure what I would have done without it :)

Cziga, I had trouble finding my exchange list too, after the restructuring. To edit your exchange list, click on "Your Houzz" (in the upper right of the screen), then click on "Edit Profile". From the profile page, find the "advanced settings" button... that will allow you to edit your exchange list, messaging access, and other aspects of your profile.

thank you so much! I found my trade list and figured out how to edit it, and my profile :) Learning new systems is difficult, thank you for the help!

I would also like to trade for Bosnian Pole and Giant Red Tarka. I just updated my trade list. Most of those listed are fresh seeds from this Spring. I can send seeds now, but I won't be planting till mid-September.

Shuffles I grew Bosnian pole last year so I have a good supply of fresh seed, can't help with the Giant Red Tarka tho, if you can't find a source locally or close by message me and I'll see what I can do.
