Living room mirrors

I am trying to find mirrors for the walls on either side of my fireplace and TV because I think they will add light to the room. Although it is a large area, the ceilings are low and there is very little light in there.

Should I get horizontal mirrors to make the ceiling seem higher? How big or how much of the wall should I cover? How thick or have you ever frame should I get? I have no idea.

If mirror is what you want i would have them cut to be the same as the arch they go in but IMO no one wants to sit in a space and look at themselves in a mirror so my vote would also be art and lighting.

Thank you. I never even considered that because I am so concerned with brightening up the space. If I followed your advice, would you have identical art and what shape? Horizontal or vertical?

Colour is just as important as light -- I would go for large artwork in the niches, otherwise follow Patricia's advice and have the mirror cut to follow the arch.

The art wouldn't have to be matching, but need to have similar color scheme. Another idea might be to add shelving.

If you add shelving, you can still mirror the niches, and it will brighten the space without having the full reflection.

Artwork with some color covering as much of wall as possible would be good. If you do shelves. I suggest painting niches behind shelves for contrast. Mirrors would be my last option.

Thank you but I don't see the similarity between any of those rooms and mine. I am now trying to decide between the artwork and the mirrors. I definitely do not want shelves. Thank you all.

That is a lovely room! But mirrors-- no. It would feel like a hotel.

You don't seem to lack for artificial lighting. I take it that it's the lack of natural lighting that is the issue-- that you don't want to require lights on during the day?

If that's the case, you might consider tucking a thin line of tiny 4000K LED lights on top of your ceiling molding and pointing up at the ceiling. That light will reflect off the white ceiling and lighten the entire room indirectly. It's still artificial light, but it will feel more natural because it's indirect. If you decide to do something like this, make sure to consult with a certified lighting designer.
