Oh man, I was told that the furniture should all be on the rug. Is this true or do you recommend a smaller rug to go in front of furniture?

Jennifer's rug suggestions are great. You can place the furniture completely on the rug, completely off the rug or with just the front feet of the furniture on the rug.

It's not that furniture must all fit on the rug, it's that the size and position of the rug needs to look intentional. So often there is a massive piece of furniture and this poor little rug looking like it fell from the sky into the wrong room and is shying away from the big scary couch.

So usually, it's recommended that the rug be bigger than the furniture that is going on it. That said, I think because your sectional is plenty large, it can anchor the space so you only need overlap the front of the sectional with the rug. Like this:

That said, a larger rug gives you more options.

It's a nice rug! But have you seen it in person? If not, as one of the Houzz Pros says all the time (wish I could give credit but her name is escaping me), order the smallest version possible so you can see it in your house. If the colours work and you like the quality, order the size you need. If not, return the little one and keep looking.

How about an anthracite patchwork rug?
