Question: Dividing Catasetum back bulbs

Hi guys,

I'm brand new to Catasetums, but just got an Fdk After Dark and Cycnodes Wine Delight orchid last weekend. It's far too early for dividing it, but I was just curious how it would work for the future, and I can't seem to find much literature online about how and when to divide Catasetums, or if it's even recommended.

My questions:

How many times does a back bulb sprout new growth before it's spent? Barring any infections or pests, does it ever get spent or does it just go on forever?

If they do go on forever, can you just split off any old back bulb and expect it will sprout for you next year, or is there a way you select which ones to divide?

Is there a proper time to do a division? I'm guessing probably in the dormancy phase, but can someone corroborate this?

Is there a proper way to do a division? Do you keep the roots?

Sorry for the 20 questions - you guys are always so helpful though! Thanks in advance :)

Kelli
