Are the chairs charcoal and the floral charcoal and gray?

I like the red walls. kudos to you for being brave and keeping them. You are going to probably get a lot of negative comments about them.

I would definitely get a new area rug for the sitting area. Take off the big pillows on the chairs and get some lumbar.

Drape color doesn't work well with red walls. Seriously consider vertical wood blinds in the same finish as your favorite wood furnishings.

Add a really great curio to replace the comfortable looking but very unattractive chair left of the fireplace. Repurpose the chair elsewhere.

Do find a rug that suits both your taste and the room.

Consider a large round black leather (or faux leather) storage ottoman with a top that flips to act as a coffee table instead of just a coffee table.

Definitely a new carpet. Look for gold and a similar red to your wallpaper. You have quite a few chairs to fit them into a scheme for this space. Especially by the piano, that doesn't look like it's part of a plan. I feel the ceiling colors aren't right with the red. I'd rather see white with tiny bit of red. On the recessed part of the ceiling, you could paint a complimentary color to the red. This ceiling would be an opportunity to go with one theme or another. You mentioned beach, French, shabby chic .... I feel that painting this recess in the ceiling a particular color would influence the overall look and lead to a "theme" for this space.

I'd go for either a jute/sisal rug for both sitting area and dining area, or for an overdyed cream/beige oriental rug. I've photoshopped a Pottery Barn one into your room, but there are loads of them available that are cheaper. The coffee table I've put in is an oriental opium table (overstock).

I would add a chandelier to the sitting area (if possible). Add gold and cream colours, they go nicely with your red walls. Toile de jouy fabric has a French country feel to it. Lots of framed pictures.

Shame your flowery chairs are so dark. Would have been great if they'd been cream or red/cream. Oh well... How about a white slipcover for the large chair in the corner, with red/white pillows?

Would you consider (chalk) painting the cabinet?
