If you are growing these on in containers then yes, you will need to fertilize some. Because containers are filled with generally nutrient-poor potting mix and because they are watered so frequently, any nutrient load the potting medium may have is rapidly depleted and will need to be replaced. For my larger containerized maples, I dose each spring with a small handful of a CRF like Osmocote and sometimes supplement during the primary growing season with a dilute liquid I use on all my container plantings. I favor a Dyna Gro product like Liquid Grow but Foliage Pro would work equally as well. Use periodically at half strength.

If that's the case - and you feel the soil quality of the bed is good - then really no fertilizing is required!!

I agree with garden girl Any container plant even seedlings need fertilizer. As for raised bed you would have to test the soil to really know what you 'need'. I'd apply a modest amount of slow release fertiKizer and compost. They can grow fast. I've had some grow three feet in the first year. But they vary a lot even in the same batch, but that's part of the fun.
