The Tappan brand disappeared with Whirlpool's purchase of Maytag.

As for a range which will last another 30 years, your most likely bet would be a rock-bottom-of-the-line gas stove with no electronics on it to speak of. No idea if that even will be possible to find in a 36-inch size. There are plenty of 36" ranges which will last for a long long time, but they're very spendy and may not fit into your décor quite the same way as the Tappan.

We paid $650 then for it (still have the receipt & manual!) - an $$$ purchase for us then for sure but think for 30 years of use, we 'got our money's worth' don't you think? :) It had all the 'bells & whistles' for sure then for that price -most of which I never used though!

Strange, even Maytag which was our choice of washers years ago, has been taken over & built by others :(

Tappan, lol. I was in a rental last year that had their electric cooktop and ovens. They worked fairly well for their age.

Except for "pro style" and some not-quite-so-expensive Euro-style ranges, the only 36" ranges that I can recall seeing sold these days are some made by Brown Stove Works (which may also be sold under the "Summit" brand) and Peerless Premier Pro. I think AJ Madison, Appliances connection, and some of the big box stores may carry those lines as special orders. (Brown sells to Summit and most contracts with housing authorities for supplying housing projects.) I think the asking price of the Peerless Pro was something like $1300 to $1600 depending on features.

IIRC, Costco carried the Peerless Premier Pro 36" gas stoves for a few
months back in 2012 but had so many returns that they stopped carrying
that brand. That may say something about all of the 36" stoves in that price range.

Several Italian companies make of Euro-style ranges in a 36" width. IIRC, Costso sells an Ancona branded one for about $1500. We've had postings here from folks who bought 36" models of brands like
Bertazzoni, Verona, and Smeg (from AJ Madison, Appliances Connection,
and etc.) for between $2600 and $3k. Reviews have been mixed

There is the NXR 36" which often can be had for something like $2600 and may be the best bet for a relatively solid and durable 36" stove. However, you have to look for sales as NXR seems to be trying to bimp its prices up-market.

Several years ago, Frigidaire had a line of so-called 26" Professional (FPGIF) but I think that was discontinued as were the Sears Kenmore versions. They had tiny ovens.

1st Tappan was owned by Frigidaire/Electrolux. (I used to be a factory tech for them).

Regarding the oven burner.. This is just in need of a glow bar replacement. The glow bar will glow red but it is not providing the correct amp draw to open the safety valve. My recommendation is to replace the glow bar.

Glow bar should be, maybe, $40. Often an easy DIY project.

Since you really like it, and it fits in its current space, I think it's worth trying to figure out how to get it fixed.

Thanks for the info. !! unfortunately,was told it was the 'safety shut-off valve' for the oven ( part model specific & would cost over $300 for a new part & the place here said they couldn't even find that model listed any more!) My husband so far can make it ignite by getting down on his back w/a flashlite & hit the spot a few times in back of the oven underneath & it will start/ignite! I didn't know those ranges back then (1986 our sales receipt says) had those type of ignitions?! The top burners & middle top grill come on & ignite just fine yet!

Imagine an appliance now days lasting that long?!! Used to be, the brand name meant something but now with so many changes in ownership, etc. it is hard to tell who now makes a certain brand .... like who makes the stoves now for Sears (Kenmore)?, & our old favorite years ago: Maytag!

Problem now is finding the correct model number for local shops to try & find the correct Glow bar part! Husband searched the stove all over with no luck finding any numbers but the receipt (YES !! I still have the sales receipt in the Owner's Guide from 9/29/1986!!) & the model number on the receipt says: 36-3272L but no shops here have that old number on record. Some find the number but with several more numbers at the end.

Still hopeful though?!

The bar registered less than 3.2 amps .... so with a lot of effort, the old 30 year old glow bar was removed & taken to a local appliance parts store & was able to get a new replacement part for about $45.

New part was put in easily, oven turned on.......the oven burner came ON!!!! Now that 36 in. 30 yr. old Tappan gas range will probably out-live me!

So grateful for your helpful & money-saving (don't have to buy a $$$ new stove!) advice everyone!

A correction to Jakvis' post on March 3rd.

Tappan was first an independent appliance manufacturer out of Mansfield. Ohio. It was bought by White Consolidated Industries (WCI), which also owned the Frigidaire, Kelvinator and Gibson brands. WCI was subsequently bought by Electrolux and eventually, all brands except Frigidaire and Electrolux disappeared from the market.

Jakvis, LOL, I am willing to bet you are correct on the 100% and thank you for your sage advice. Not being familiar with gas ranges my question, does the safety valve only control the gas for the oven?

Depending on the oven type you may have one safety valve that controls the single Bake/Broil burner,

Or you can have a dual safety valve that controls separate Bake and Broil burners,

Or you can have 2 separate safety valves where each individually controls a Bake or a Broil burner.

I think venmar might have been asking if the oven valve also controlled gas for stovetop burners.

The oven safely valve has only controlled gas for ovens on everything from the OP's old Tappan up through the current crop of gas and dual fuel ranges. It is part of the tried and true thermostatic temperature control system for the oven.

Think about this, venmar: In a power-outage, can you light the stovetop burners with a match? The lack of power keeps the oven safety valve from opening, so you cannot light the oven, but you can light the stovetop burners on most most gas ranges.

Even for the few (mostly-expensive) major brand stoves that have been "enhanced" to route all gas controls through one of the electronic control boards --- meaning that you cannot light those stoves' top burners in a power outage --- there is still a separate valve for the oven(s).

We’ve had ours since early 2000s- the computer isn’t working so the oven max temp is 275 - the broiler and stove top (can swap griddle for an extra burner though we never have). Ordered parts but alas need to replace - any suggestions? Must be 36” and stainless with black preferred
