Making own designs for quilting machines with computer control?

How do you go from a design to the machine's computer so the computer can make the machine do the stitching. The machine I have in mind is one that moves the head back and forth on a beam (not a longarm, an ink-jet printer-like head).
I see people selling designs, but I want to make one for a local quilter. I'm experienced at CAD and CNC machines, but the details of the quilting machine's requirements aren't easy to find.

What is the file format? The interface? Any clues where to ask?

I know nothing about what you're talking about.

That said, what machine is it? Is there only one of this type machine on the market?

I would think someone would need to know at least the brand and maybe the model number to answer your question.

I know with the embroidery machines you need to have software that can write your design to the appropriate format for the machine. It's probably the same for the computerized quilting, but I don't know for sure.

I would check the website of the brand of machine the quilter owns (Gammill, AQS, etc.) and see what you can find out there.
