Lauren is right. That is a mid-century piece. It's not meant to have hardware at any rate. If you decide you have to change it consult a professional. Have it refinished with a new lacquer.

I know this is not the same dresser, but mid century modern furniture is often unadorned with hardware. Totally agree with previous posters- don't change a thing before getting a professional opinion. I think it's a great piece regardless of value, and would considerate it a wonderful family heirloom.

That piece may not be to your taste but I agree with others. Look into its origins and you may be able to sell it - or appreciate it a little more :)

Looks like it came from the 1950's thus mid-century modern is probably correct. Although not shown in the picture, it probably sits upon short, pointed legs. It was never designed to have hardware but to be managed by the open area under each drawer for finger holds.
See if you can sell it if you don't want it.
It's just not a style that will show well in chalk paint.

Thanks everyone! I really do appreciate antique furnishings, but this one is such a different style than the other pieces in my family. Knowing that it could be an original mid-century piece makes me appreciate it a bit more; I will just learn to love it :) Thanks again!

It appears to be a Heywood Wakefield piece. They are selling for $300-800 depending on where you are, condition & method of selling, FYI. I just did a quick Google search & eBay has lots similar for sale.

If you are concerned about mixing the piece with other woods, live with it as is for a bit. My dining room has a maple Heywood hutch from the 1950's, a teak dining table from the 1970's & a black lacquer piano. I love the mix of woods & eras.

Look at the other areas on your home & then inspiration photos. See what changes you'd like to make.

It has potential but looks crammed in that corner. Before doing anything to it I'd clean it with Murphy's Oil Soap oil based cleaner. It really looks fine as is but find a better spot.

You could add some really great hardware and maybe even some feet to the piece to update it in a fun new way. I would google modern dresser and tons of inspiration pics will pop up. You could always keep it clean and crisp with white drawers and a dark wood exterior.
