Trash pullout: no handles?

last modified: 10 years ago

Thanks to mushcreek for helping me think outside the box (well, underneath the sink, anyway!) with his RevAShelf trash pullout idea. I really love this model as it comes with a handle:

However, given our sink cabinet configuration, this version would work better (our space has more width than depth):

This one doesn't come with a handle, and the glide hardware doesn't seem as nice/durable/glide-y as the chrome version above. (I'm thankful our local BigBox had both of these on the shelf, so I'm able to bring both home to have a look.)

For those of you who have something similar to the second (no-handle) version, do you have to yank on the trash can to slide it out every time you need it? And does the can slide out easily enough? I can't imagine all this wear and tear wouldn't crack the plastic on the bin itself.

A door mount isn't feasible in our case.

TIA.

I don't like to pull trash out with dirty hands so I always go with foot or Quito trash.

What about install a drawer. Put the trash cans in it and attach the drawer to the door?

I am not sure that the handle - less version is any different than placing a trash receptacle simply in the sink base and sliding it out without ANY mechanism...

jannicone - I'd say the only difference would be that one isn't dragging the bottom of the bin back and forth over the cabinet floor (undesirable!). I was just wondering if anyone had used the handle-less version and not had the plastic crack over time -- though I rather doubt it.

beacham - We've actually had a 13 gal. Simple Human step trash can in the kitchen for a number of years. But being almost empty nest, we just don't need such a large receptacle. When we were planning our cabinets, I didn't want to dedicate space for a trash pullout, and figured I'd retrofit something later. Later is now. :) I thought I'd splurge a bit just this once, not DIY, and buy something pre-made...I'm almost there! I think we'll just end up going with the handled chrome version (4-screw install...easy-peasy), use the shorter $4 Lowes bin (so it'll clear our sink), and (as nightowl did) notch the backside of the bin a bit so the unit will fit.

My DD has an under sink trash pullout without a handle similar to your second picture. She has lived in her house 6 years and the trash container/pullout came with the house. Based on when the previous owner remodel the kitchen, I am pretty sure the container and pullout mechanism are at least 15 years old. The container has not cracked and the sliding mechanism works very smoothly.

I watch my grandkids at my DD's house several days a week, so I have actually being using her trash pullout multiple times per day for the past 2 years. No problems with it what so ever.

Thanks for the feedback, badgergal -- that's really helpful to know. DH and I have been doing the pros and cons talk for the past couple of hours. He'd prefer the handle-less one, probably because it entails a bit less re-plumbing on his part to fit the unit in (not diminishing his task whatsoever, but he was going to streamline the pipes down there anyway -- previous 'pro' left us with quite a bulky octopus down there!). It may also come down to how much usable storage remains after the can's in.
