I think you should definitely consider pruning the plant asap. The fact that it is not fruiting at all is probably not due to sun exposure. Is it still dormant? If so, I would recommend to prune off an inch or two from the main branches, to help it branch out and fruit rather than focus on growing tall. Don't be afraid to remove quite a bit and take this opportunity to shape the tree the way you like. This years new wood should produce figs. Also, if there are many shoots coming out the bottom of the plant, this will definately hinder the growth of figs, you can remove these and use them to propagate new plants!

In NJ you need more sunlight than 4 hrs, the figs will be very low quality if they do form and ripen this year. The more sunlight the better.
