Speed Queen Water Fill Issues

My Speed Queen Washer suddenly stopped filling when "hot water" wash is selected. The water barely trickles out. Any ideas on what could cause this and how to fix it without calling the repair person?

this is a TL right....wish I could help but I ccan't h3!! I can't even help my own Queen..lol...hang on I'm sure Dadoes will see this...if you don't already know he's a washing machine Genius. .I'm not brown nosing, just stating the truth .

Yes, it is a top loader. Thanks, Debbi, I will do that. But I thought it possibly had something to do with the valve because it sounded fine when I first started the machine, then a few seconds later it sounded somewhat "labored" and when I opened the lid, I could see that the water was barely trickling in. The machine is only four years old (out of warranty) and given SQ's reputation for heavy duty machines and my own experience of four years of trouble free washing, I'm surprised to have something go wrong with it so soon.

When Dadoes sees this I'm sure he will have great input on the problem... as a try it yourself before you call someone person I try what I know to try first.. which would be check the hose screens for debris, then unplug the machine let it sit for a few minutes and plug it back in. I don't know if yours has dials or has computer components though so unplugging for a while might not do a thing....

Mine has mechanical controls. I'll post back after checking the hoses.

Sounds like the hot water solenoid is malfunctioning and not fully opening.

Should be an easy enough fix.

Dadoes will defiantly know how to fix this.

As suggested above, disconnect the supply hoses, check for clogged debris screens. Should be screen inside the water valve connections at the machine and *may* also be screens at the faucets.

Does it exhibit the same behavior when started now? Water runs briefly at normal rate then slows to a trickle? If so, the valve may be bad. They can go bad in a way that the coil breaks down when it gets heated from use. Clogged screen would normally keep the flow rate continually slow, unless the debris shifts around.

    Thanks everyone for your replies!

Have a question for other SQ owners ... if you have "hot" selected, does the hot water normally flow into the tub at the same rate as if you had "cold" selected? My hot water flow has always been considerably less than cold from day one and I thought that was just the way this washer is.

We are going to replace the hoses as well as the hot and cold valves at the wall. I'll report back!

How old is your washer? The machines a few years back(SQ) had a smaller hole in the fill valve and this will cut hot pressure down when filling. Purpose was when using warm, you use more cold water than hot to make the warm. Years ago all were 50/50, then they went to 60/40, maybe even 70/30. Dadoes can tell you but I do know SQ hot has a smaller hole than the cold side of the valve.

I believe the newest SQ models now have a 50/50 valve since they have gone to an Eco rinse if desired.

I bought my washer in May 2012, model AWN 542. I have now replaced the hoses and the valves at the wall. The hot water valve, when removed, had a bunch of debris clogging it up including a big piece of white plastic material about 1/4 x 3/4 inch big. The hot water is now filling up at what seems like its previous pace, but still definitely not as fast moving as the cold which looks like a small waterfall when filling, as does the warm. The hot doesn't come out in a "waterfall" at all.

On a side note, none of the hoses sold at Home Depot came with screens. I had to reuse the screens from the old hoses.

I don't have access to a SQ for direct exam. Not unusual that water valves aren't 50/50 flow proportion between hot and cold, with the higher flow typically on the cold side. Most supply hoses I've seen don't include screens but screens can be obtained separately. Water valves in the machine always have screens but it's helpful to have screens at the faucet end of the hoses for ease of access to clean them.

Thanks everyone. I do hope someone with a mechanical model like mine will chime in regarding the fill rate for hot vs. cold. Would be nice to know for sure if it's supposed to be this way.

Jelly: I went to Automatic Washer.org and found something. If you will key in thread # 44108 speed queen 432 warm water not warm enough it tells that they fill with 70% cold 30% hot and the hole in the fill valve is smaller on hot than the cold side. There are several more things on this if you will google your trouble. Be sure to use the thread # if you search AW for that.

I have the AWN432 I don't know the percentages but I'm here to say my warm water setting gives me at best tepid, its far from being warm. My hot water flow is about the same going into the machine as the cold.

Jellytoast--I have a SQ mechanical AWN 412, several years old, and yes, the cold water fills faster than the hot water. Something to do with restrictions in the water inlet valve. Discussion about this (and how to remedy) at the link...

I read only the first few posts on that Lantro, I have the newer model bought last August. ..I have excellent rollover even on full loads and I get true hot tap, close enough to the top of the tub to be able to do full loads so it is a full fill...SQ must have changed some things from their older machines.

I do get true hot tap in my AWN542, but it just doesn't fill at the same rate as the cold fill. As long as this is the way it is supposed to be, I'm okay with it. And the warm is more like tepid. Ci_lantro (and Sparky), I'll check out that link.

Jelly, I was referring to the link Lantro sent.

Thanks, mamapinky, I looked at it. There are instructions there for drilling out the valve on hot water side. Sounds like a simple fix, as long as you don't drill too far in. I wish I'd looked at those inlet holes before I hooked up my new hoses and pushed the washer back into place!

I emailed a friend who has the 432 and she said that her hot water has a slower fill rate than the cold water. It's interesting that your machine doesn't have that issue.

Must have to do with the hoses, ill double check my flow rate today.

Pink--Isn't your machine the one with the Eco cycle? If so that is why your valve is different.(full fill) Jelly could order a new valve using your model # so both inlet holes would be the same. The drilling out I would never get them the same.

Yeah, sparky, the drilling part scares me. The slower hot water fill has never really bothered me too much, as long as it's designed that way and not "broken" then it's fine.

I know, sometimes just better to leave well enough alone. I rather have slow hot water than none.

    jellytoast thanked sparky823

Yes my cold and hot fill at the same flow...and that's right Sparky my machine does have the Eco cycle, lot of good it does me, a cold wash, no thanks. But sometimes if I think I will need extra rinse I'll turn it around to eco rinse than back to deep rinse, boy I am always playing around with my washer..I should get a big rock.

Jello, just order the hoses for my model. Done.

    jellytoast thanked mamapinky0

If I needed another extra rinse I would just turn it to the Eco cycle wash part and let it complete whole cycle with shorter wash time instead of doing Eco rinse then turning back to other cycle for deep rinse---but that is just me....that way you get a deep rinse, a spray rinse and a fast spin--done.

Why did I never think of that lol

mamapinky, what do you mean "hoses"? Do you mean "valve"? Isn't the water flow determined by the valve inside the washer?

    Sorry I ment valve..lol

    jellytoast thanked mamapinky0

And that part is interchangeable with my model? Can someone confirm that?

    That I don't know.

    jellytoast thanked mamapinky0

If you mean the valve interchangable, I would think so. Neither have the ATC so they should swap out fine. Thought you were satisfied with slow hot fill since you found out that is normal for your model.

    jellytoast thanked sparky823

Sparky, I am fine with the slower hot water fill since it has been determined to be normal, but if it was a cheap and easy fix to switch valves, I might be up for it. But I wouldn't want to order a part and take the machine apart to find that the parts weren't interchangeable. And the info would be helpful for others who aren't fine with the slower fill!

jelly, did you ever resolve this issue? I have the same problem with my Speed Queen washer bought around 2012...

It too had an issue I can't remember if it was hot or cold. Husband cleaned the filter and then it worked fine.

I just replaced belt, pump and valve, I thought about drilling but bought new valve instead. I have good flow of hot through the hose but poor flow into tub when hooked up to washer valve. I think its a terrible washer, been this way for years, I would rather control my own flow and temp simply by adjusting water pressure at the cold and hot inlet valves from house. It is ridiculous slow hot water flow rate in my case, rather have whirlpool. But any suggestions to help would be appreciated, hoses are clean.

The hot water on my SQ washer trickled from the beginning when it was new. Had my handyman do the drilling solution and has worked great ever since.

I just tried drilling out to 3/8” and didn’t see much if any improvement. I drilled the old part guessing 10 years old washer, never worked right. I looked at the new valve and see no difference, tiny water inlet hole. I will probably drill out this one next and try new valve.
