You can absolutely go with dark floors and dark furniture...agree with the light area rug...You can also keep your walls lighter, draperies and add in light accessories...Are u putting in any lighting? I don't see many.

Lighting project will have to wait a while (roof, furnace, etc...) which is why I'm afraid of the room being too cozy with dark floors and dark furniture. Does that kill the natural light? Do lighter floors help accentuate the natural light in absence of nice recessed lighting?

I Love the Darker Flooring Versus the Light Flooring, I have had Both in Diff Houses, and I have to say the Darker Floor looks better and is easier to match Light color paint and accesories..

If you do go with say a walnut floor,I would think you need some more lighting.
You might want to consider going the other way .White floor dark furniture.
Or recess lights on the dark floor. You must remeber that the darker the wood floors are, the smaller the room will appear.
Dark wood floors go great with high ceilings! Tall white / light baseboard!
