Personally I like the red roof, and the brick, not the shutters so much with what looks like little heart cutouts nor the front door with the oval glass window, but mostly what I see is the need for some serious landscaping. No house looks good when it is so bare around it. You need bushes, flowers, maybe a tree or two. Incorporate lots of different hieghts and colors that will flourish throughout the growing season. Have fun! It is a lovely home.

Adorable house. How soon is soon for replacing the roof? I would choose roof color before picking colors for trim. I would match the trim to the gutters. The shutters aren't necessary as the lower ones are wrong size. But if you like them paint them to match gutters also. The door is not a good style for dutch colonial/gambrel style house. Go with a more traditional style with plain glass, no brass, window. Choose a color to complement trim. paint diamond window trim color, also.

HI -- Very charming Dutch Colonial house . I would remove the shutters and have the stone cleaned and let the stone be the feature . Paint the main of the house in " Manchester Tan " and paint the trim " Willow " by Benjamin Moore paints . Or paint the main of the house in a navy blue and then a tan on the trims . These colors should go with any roof colors you choose . Do some landscaping with a mass planting on the foundation and add a feature tree like a weeping birch . Widen the front walk to the width of the front steps with some paving bricks and maybe some small hedging such as boxwoods. Or get a plan and materials from your local garden center . Add some feature landscape lighting . Front doors colors - Prairie Lilly or Vintage Wine or Mermaid or classic Black .

This must be a current "barely spring" photo, because the vegetation is leafless. I would get rid of the shutters, and replace the front door with a door with a simple window. The white parts of the house could be painted to match a color from the brick...creamy tan?...a medium beige? The trim could be either a darker color from the brick, or to match a new roofing color. Plant a flowering tree in the larger grass area, and surround it with flowering perennials (or seasonal flowers if you want your own gardening job). I think the new front door may be the most important choice.

I think black, grey and white theme will be great to update the look.

1. Whitewash paint the brick white & everything solid white, and change the front door black and into a more modern look. Like this:

2. Change the metal roof into lightest grey-almost white / white, this reflecting colors will be more energy efficient (save your bills more) as they will reflecting heat during scorching summer.

3. Paint the window trim white (for 1st floor), and all the shutters black. But the 2nd floor and the stripes wood background paint all the window trim black.

4. For more additional colors; add up round evergreen boxwood in row repetition with just one variety of herbaceous perennials - ex. white tall phlox 'david' / lavenders / hydrangea 'annabelle' / ornamental grass & dwarf pennisetum cross planting along the house. Example:
