Rose recommendations

I'd like some recommendations for some roses.

I'd like the roses to:

1. Stay small 3X3 or so (I have very limited full sun garden space)

2. Be very fragrant

3. Have very good to excellent rebloom

4. Be somewhat blackspot resistant in the Southeast.

Thanks.

Jeff, you might want to try a website called helpmefind.com . You can do searches on there. Try the Advanced Search in the left-hand column.

I'd recommend deactivating the cloaking device, and letting us in on where in the southeast you are going to be growing these roses. Since it covers about 4 zones and 10 states (give or take a few, depending on your personal definition) any suggestions are going to be somewhat hit or miss depending on how lucky the suggestor is in reading your mind.

Yes, the climate zone is particularly important to know. I know of some roses which evidently stay 3 feet tall, unless you are in a warm zone, where they might be 6-8 feet tall. Pls share your zone and more specific location.

Sorry. I don't know how to disable the cloaking device. I didn't even know there was such a thing. I am in zone 7B Marietta, Georgia. The area is very sunny (southern side of the house--sun all day). If you need more info, I'm happy to provide it.

Jeff at the top of the page put your arrow (Your Hozz). Click edit profile on that page your can update your publicly viewed name. Then you can add your zone and state. Then click submit so that it is saved. You can also do the advanced settings to change other things.

I think I added the zone information to my profile. Any suggestions for roses?

Easy roses that grow happily in this no spray central Virginia hot & humid garden that may meet your criteria for size, are highly blackspot resistant, bloom abundantly & very nearly continuously with very good to excellent perfume on naturally rounded & leafy bushes include:

Easy Does It - a blend of fruit sherbet hues - www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.58853.0&tab=1 - deepest colors only on first flush in a cool Spring & last blooms during an Indian Summer with cool nights, with saturated pastels in between, very good rose with citrus & spice fragrance, blooms that last well on the bush & drop their petals cleanly when spent. Each of the tabs at HelpMeFind are clickable, with Member Ratings, Comments & Gardens especially helpful.

Sunsprite - a deep yellow that gradually fades paler in a pleasing contrast to newer blooms, petals drop cleanly - www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.6077.1&tab=1 - excellent citrus spicy fragrance.

Julia Child - a deep yellow that fades to butter & butter cream for a blend of colors sometimes tinted apricot, clean petal drop - www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.37391.1&tab=1 - very good clove fragrance.

Belinda's Dream - a warm medium pink with buds that unfurl slowly, petals drop cleanly unless it's rained continually for days here when blown blooms cling & need to be removed - www.helpmefind.com/gardening/l.php?l=2.574&tab=1 - very good rose & raspberry fragrance. A child of Tiffany that Sara-Ann's shown.

Savannah - a salmon pink recently released newcomer that looks very promising - newflora.com/product/savannah-rose/ and www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.71680&tab=1 - arrived here only last year so under evaluation in this garden.

Ken & others who garden closer to your location will hopefully chime in with more accurate information on mature sizes for your conditions, evaluations of own root & which rootstocks work well for them & suggestions for other roses.

    Welcome to the forums!

Belinda's Dream gets big but can be tamed.

vasue, I wanted to recommend Belinda's Dream and Julia Child both, but wasn't sure about their size in Zone 7B, they are both great roses though. One of my BD roses gets bigger every year, but one is more compact. If fragrance wasn't a requirement, Drop Dead Red would be a good one too.

I'm unsure of mature heights on both likely for Jeff, too, Sara-Ann. Much variation of individual plants within the same garden, like your example of Belinda's Dream, let alone down the block or across state lines. Just thought to keep the ball rolling with some suggestions & encourage gardeners closer to Jeff's home to share their experiences. Your roses, as usual, are stunning & inspiring!

Thank you, Vasue. Those are great suggestions. It's not easy to know how big a rose bush is going to get.

I would suggest Ebb Tide. This one is compact and smells extremely strong and delicious. Rebloom is reliable. I cannot comment on disease resistance and I have hardly any disease here from any roses.

    Ebb Tide in winter

    Ebb Tide in Summer

Another small one that repeats well and fragrant is Angel Face:

Ebb Tide smells great & stays small here in North Alabama, but blackspots terribly unless sprayed with fungicide. There are quite a few blackspot resistant shrub roses that will stay a reasonable size available now, but few that are fragrant. Julia Child and all the "Easy's" (Easy Going, Easy Does It, Livin' Easy) will want to get bigger than 3 x 3, but could probably be kept pruned to that size. Kordes has released several fragrant, disease resistant roses recently, but not sure how big they are going to get here yet. You might also consider some of the smaller OGR/antique roses...Marie Pavie, Clothilde Soupert, Louis Philippe & Archduke Charles are all staying within your size limit for me, have excellent rebloom, smell wonderful & have good disease resistance. Perle d'Or could most likely be kept pruned to a 3 x 3 shrub. Bloom size is much smaller on these older roses than most moderns, but they have a charm about them :)

    Marie Pavie

    Clothilde Soupert

    Louis Philippe

    Archduke Charles

    Perle d'Or

I forgot about Bolero, a modern rose with large, but old fashioned looking blooms. It stays around 3 x 3, is very fragrant and fairly disease resistant. Souvenir de la Malmaison is another antique rose that doesn't get too big here and smells great...but has much larger blooms than the other old roses I mentioned in my previous post.

I recommend the grandiflora Mother of Pearl--almost continuous bloom and very nice foliage. I first saw this rose at the UGA Trial Gardens in Athens. You might want to attend their Plantapalooza plant sale which is scheduled for April 9 this year. Their rose beds are no spray and provide a good opportunity to see how they are doing in our area.

Pat, I love all your roses, but Louis Philippe and Archduke Charles are so gorgeous! I hope you have the time to post lots of pictures during the upcoming season, I'm always amazed at how prolific and beautiful they are!

Been thinking about Archduke Charles, but your pics have sold me ! Would also love Clothilde Soupert, (and yours is so gorgeous) but she would definitely ball here...Louis Philippe looks yummy too.

Thanks Sara Ann! I will try post more this season :) Love seeing how well your roses are doing...they all look great!!! Curdle, I hesitated about Archduke Charles initially since there were mixed opinions on fragrance, but am very glad I went ahead with him...smells wonderful to me & has been a very good rose here. Clothilde will often ball in the cool, wet spring and occasionally if we get really strong rain in warmer weather, but mostly opens here even with our high humidity...seems to need the warmth to coax her many petals open. I would definitely avoid her in a climate with cool, wet summers, though.

And to the OP, Jeff, junco has a great suggestion about visiting the trial gardens in Athens. No better way to choose than to see and smell the roses first hand locally in no spray growing conditions!

    Hey Jeff!

I live in Marietta Georgia! Howdy neighbor!

I'm fresh off a David Austin post, so I have them in the forefront of my mind... You didn't mention color being an issue, so I'll just throw out the ones I have that are smaller, and bloom well, and fragrant.

    Queen of Sweden

    Molineux

    Carding Mill

some would say Munstead Wood, it gets pretty wide for me

    Sharifa Asma

    julia child

    Ambridge Rose

someone suggested Belinda's dream, she gets big here, and starts blooming kinda late when it's hotter. I don't find her too fragrant

    darcy bussell

double delight, fragrant cloud... HT--most of your narrow HTs would be good

    souvenir de la malmaison

these are all good for 7b, but the HTs are going to need fungicide.

such stunning rose pictures!! i'm in awe!!

i have a picture of mother of pearl. i gave it away, because there is no fragrance, but it is an amazing rose - tons of flowers all summer.

it's the rose in the middle. it has spread into the picture on the left which was flowerless at the time.

Sorry, I missed the fragrance requirement! I'm not sure if all the roses at the trial gardens will be blooming in April, but they also have an open house mid summer when you could get an even better idea. For the Plantapalooza there will be several different plant sales going on on campus--if you participate you then receive a coupon for a percentage off at several nurseries in Athens. It's always lots of fun.

Thanks everyone for the awesome pictures and great information. I love so many of your recommendations. Wish I had a lot more room.

I will try to get to the Plantaplooza in April. It sounds like a fun thing to do.

I've decided to go with some David Austins--mainly for fragrance. If they get larger than the space can handle, I'll consider giving them away and trying something else. Hopefully, I won't have to.

I've decided on Sister Elizabeth. I had this one before. It was very small when I moved away from my old house but I had seen a couple of blooms and really liked it.

I also decided on Young Lycidas and Olivia Rose Austin. I hesitated on trying a new introduction, but went for "daring". :-)

I'll let you know how they turn out.

please let me know how you find the fragrance of sr. elizabeth. i almost ordered it - but was scared that the myrrh might be too strong for me. i'm also getting YL and OR. hopefully they work out for us!

Another smaller DA you might consider with and awesome fragrance is Tamora. I love this rose, sorry I don't have any pic to post but she stays small for me and blooms are beautiful too.
