When I clicked on "more info" under the picture, I saw that someone had asked what the surround was and the answer was "steel." So I'm assuming that it's just large, thin squares of steel that have been installed, like tiles would be. That's a fabulous fireplace.

I really really like the looks of this fireplace, very different and the large pieces are very appealing and make a wonderful focal point or even moreso.
Now if you dont mind me asking, any thoughts on what the finish on the steel is exactly?

princesslittlepants, (I just wanted to say your name!), I don't know what the finish is. It looks like a wash of some sort was swirled over it that had a reaction to give it that look, but it's so hard to tell on the picture. I'd bring it to a metal fabricator (yellow pages would be handy here) and get some guidance there. Another source for this kind of information might be an art school. I talk to everyone when I'm trying to figure something out! Good luck.

has anyone discovered the exact material of this fireplace?

it looks to me like hot-rolled sheets of steel, then either rubbed with gun oil, or possibly buffed or sanded and patinaed. sculpt nouveau (google it) has a lot of great info on patinaing metal.

I emailed architect. She stated it was cold rolled steel. They patina'd the metal. Went to metal fabricator and got it priced to cover mine 8ft x7ft approx 750.00 for steel with bends to cover 5 inches of side of fireplace. Just wished I knew how they mounted it.

it looks to me like it's screwed in. Drill holes every 12" or so, and screw it into the wall (make sure there's backing where you attach it). You can use stainless screws for a contrast, black screws to minimize the look, or Sculpt Nouveau has some patina stains that will let you color the screws to match the patinaed metal.

We are trying to engineer a steel fireplace for our under construction house right now. How are the pieces attached? welded together, grinded and polished? attached to the wall behind and space left for the expansion of the steel? PS the patina is beautiful!

I'm working on samples for a client now to duplicate this look with liquid iron and other materials. This will reduce the total cost since installing metal is very expensive. Once I make the samples I'll post them. I believe the cost of this process and traveling within the USA will be much less then if real metal was used.

I decided to go with Parisian plaster instead. Thoughts?

The material is, indeed, cold-rolled steel plate with a gun-metal blue patina. It has a hand-waxed finish on top. A specialty metal fabricator should know how to apply the finish. Enjoy!
