Bad tile job?! Am I crazy?!

last modified: 10 years ago

We are currently going back and fourth with our contractor trying to get what we consider some not so great tile/grouting/caulking jobs rectified. I feel like this is subpar work that might need to be redone. I just want to make sure we're not being too picky. The concern is with penny tile we had installed in our guest bath, subway tile in the master shower and marble hex tile on the bathroom floor. I see uneven grout, seams in the penny tile towards the top of our shower, missing grout, uneven tile, different colored grout, and bad caulking.

I have so many more photos... But I guess this is all I'm allowed.

Thanks for any advice.

We are now two months over schedule for this renovation work and I'm so tired of having to go shower at a friends house :/

Looks sloppy. These are some of the same issues I have on the tile in my home, and it drives me crazy. Keep trying to get it repaired or that messiness still be annoying you years from now.

That tile job is a mess! The grout is not even done right in a lot of sections, especially in the second photo. The grout should almost be even with the tile and in some areas, you have to look hard to find the grout. The third photo is the worst because the grout looks like it was just slapped on all over. I would definitely want someone's head on a platter!

No, it looks bad. It will also be awful to try to clean.

Do insist it all be finished/fixed properly and, if you haven't yet paid him, you probably shouldn't pay him until it is or it likely never will be.

No mention of price? You get what you pay for... So, how much did you pay for the install?

(One thing that is inexcusable in all but the most ridiculously cheap installs is the different color grout--which will be very difficult to fix in the mosaic)

Your contracted is ultimately responsible for his subs. Did you have a designer who is also responsible for the GC and his subs work? Was this an experienced tile guy? Did you see examples of his work. I would not pay your contractor until it is refine up your satisfaction.

IMO this person neveer did tile before this is a huge mess and needs to be rectified to your satisfaction before one more dime is paid to your contracor

This may be a money situation. If you paid for a premium setter than this is a really bad job. If you paid the low end price well the pics say it all. Is there a GC involved? He may have cheaped out. What worries me is what you can't see. ie: correct thinset & trowel used-correct mixture etc......

This should be redone. We had similar issues with sloppy tile install. You are right to be upset! Have your GC find someone to redo it. Its ridiculous what some of these guys try to pass off as acceptable work. Good luck!

Thanks for all of your inputs, it helps to know that we're not overreacting.
We found the GC on Houzz and they had good reviews and have done higher end projects in our area. They had good examples of their work online, are licensed, got permits for the job and use basecamp as of way of keeping the project organized... So we felt comfortable using them. They definitely hire the tile guys out but tell us they've used them for even higher end projects than ours (we live in a somewhat historic/nicer area but our house is the ugly one on the block. Hence why we're renovating it)
We're paying almost 40 G's for this renovation which included turning a 4th bedroom into a closet and bath, gutting and renovating the one small full bath that was upstairs ( it's still small), adding the tiniest powder room you've ever send to our first floor where a closet used to be and demoing a wall between the kitchen and dining. We aren't doing anything crazy with the designs and are keeping things rather simple. We live in the Midwest. We spoke with a couple different contractors and these guys we're mid to higher range for us. Personally I don't feel liked we cheaped out.
It seemed like they did everything correctly below the tile but I can see I can find photos of some of that stage.
We've been satisfied with the electrical and plumbing that have been done and their carpenter is awesome. The drywall job was okay and same with the paint but they both have issues that need adjusted.
The GC himself is very nice but that doesn't help get the job done right. We're just really frustrated because we were confident in these guys and these problems keep dragging on. The tile guys have been back on a few occasions to "fix" areas of the tile but all they've done is replaced a couple badly cut tiles (when there are many more) and they started to grind out some areas around the penny tile which seem ridiculous to me. To go through and try and grind the grout out around so many areas of that tile would be the most time consuming thing in the world. The areas they did grind out look awful. They also had to replace a strip of penny tile at the top right of our shower twice. Once because the tile must have been from a different lot and the second time because the grout color was wrong. The color is better now but the tile replacement is awful.
The GC has said they will take out the penny tile if we are not satisfied and either redo it or give us the money back on that job. He hasn't mentioned that offer for the master bath with the subway and marble. I'm not sure that I want these tile guys back again to redo more bad work. But I'm so tired of not having a usable shower at our house and the thought of trying to find someone else to come out and tear it all up to start over again seems daunting too. I won't even mention that we've been paying to bring our dog to the kennel everyday while these guys work because he's aggressive and freaks out constantly if the workers are here (oops I'm mentioned it).
Sorry to rant. Thanks again for all your advice. Hopefully we can get it worked out.

40K is extremely low for the amount of work described. I'd expect at least 50%-100% higher minimum for someone who knows what he's doing and hires others of the same high caliber. In a high cost area, that 60K-80K would be double for such a project. 3 baths for 40K kinda reflects in the caliber of finish work shown. It's not surprising, in other words, to get low quality work for a low price.

Not really in love with those in progress pictures either. Green board is a no no. A wooden curb will shrink and crack. Red guard is easy to apply incorrectly and too thinly. Do you have more in progress pictures?

Unfortunately this is looking and sounding more and more like a complete do-over as Sophie is correct. Green board being just the start of your issues (current and definitely in the not to distant future if the "repair" is continued instead of a start over).

Not to keep piling on here but this type of job belongs in a house sophie does. I keep seeing these over the top "spa's" installed in homes they should not be in. Too much HGTV...Nothing but problems......

Sorry for your troubles. This looks like a complete do over.
Did you get several bids from contractors? I think at least three are recommended. You may have to get a new contractor, get your money back if you can, and cut your losses.I would not continue with this contractor. Better to stop now before you spend another dime.

We saved quite a bit of money doing a lot of research before buying things like our tile, vanity, sinks, lighting etc. Bathrooms are on either side of each other to make plumbing easier and structurally we didn't have to add any new support in the house. The biggest cost was getting the 5 inches of concrete out from underneath the old upstairs bathroom floor, that was a nightmare to find and why our house is sagging so much on one side. Lots to find in a 1920's house. This is our first time doing any type of renovations so I guess we're learning as we go. I thought I had done enough research.

Here are some photos of other work our contractor has done. All in our neighborhood and he took us to a couple of the homes to see them in person. The third pic is our neighbors bathroom which we've been in.

They get only 5 star reviews so I'm some what confused on our experience. I follow them on Instagram and Facebook and they have a million photos of them doing work and progress pics. Their company office is a few blocks from our home.

We did not hire them for any design services. That was all up to us, which I can tell you is so hard haha! Trying to pick stuff out all at once when you can't imagine it all together is rough.

You may be better off starting with a highly recommended designer. It has been our experience, our designer, recommends the contractor she trusts and has done hundreds of projects with, and is familiar with all his subs.
She is also able to get materials at her cost and pass on her discount to you, if you use her services.
This way your designer, not you, can oversee the project and rectify problems, such as yours. You are not on the hook for any re dos. She is there every step of the way.

    more progress pics

wall tile from all modern and floor from the builder depot (10$sqft)
tile, sinks, faucets from wayfair, vanity built for 600$, lights from lowes
they had to rip a board out because they put the outlets in the wrong place. Ikea vanity, ikea mirrors, faucets ikea and from amazon, lights from etsy and tile from tileshop matched to home depot prices.
Still need our toilet installed. Sink is from ikea, base is barn wood we found, tile from home depot and light from etsy.

The few pictures of the framing that you show, indicates it was done by amateurs, you will have nothing but problems down the road. You have no positive connection between adjoining walls, the corners will crack and pull apart down the road with expansion and contraction during seasonal changes. As everything else goes I'm sure you already know.

Good luck, I hope it works out.

You are absolutely not being picky. It is an extremely sloppy job. GN Builders is 100 percent right. I hope you didn't pay him in full.

I would take your GC up on his offer to remove the tile and refund your money just as fast as I could. Much of what you've shown is not fixable--certainly not by the same workmen, if at all. Expecting the same people that created this problem to suddenly develop skills and standards they didn't have (or chose not to use) is way too optimistic.

Hope you're confirming every verbal conversation in writing via email, and documenting everything.

So sorry that your eagerly anticipated reno should be such a major burden and headache. Comments that blithely dismiss this disaster as being a matter of you get what you pay for are neither helpul nor accurate in this instance. Whatever you paid was too much. You did your due diligence and research on the GC, and did a great job of sourcing materials yourself to keep costs down. The GC presumably did not base his bid on the understanding that workmanship would be laughably amateurish.

    Good luck to you.

Not known if this situation was resolved but I feel so sorry for you and your family. Hire a lawyer and show him the photos especially the photo of missing grout between the tiles. It indicates right away that the worker was clueless regarding the function of grout.

This a terrible job. From tile cutting , installing and grouting and really bad caulking all unacceptable. My 10 year old could do a better job. Make the builder fixes all or everyday you will see all the defects and regret accepting the shoddy workmaship.

Harry, this is an old post - hopefully poster has it rectified by now.

The workmanship is horrible. Not only from how it looks, but even the poor framing and the fact that they used greenboard instead of Durock cement backer board (wondering if it's even to code) will eventually result in water damage to your home....serious serious damage.

Try taking the GC to court to get your money back. Talk to a lawyer. There is NO fixing this. The tile needs to be completely ripped out, and the work needs to be done properly from the base up.

I find it hard to believe that some of the photos you posted of the GC's previous work are actually his work. Too easy to find pretty pictures online and post them as your own. Even if it IS his work, perhaps he used different tiling subs on previous jobs. Something that looks pretty can still have issues if the construction work underneath was not done correctly or to code. Sorry this happened to you...sounds like a real nightmare. I hope you get it fixed and get some of your money back from this crook of a GC.

to Build Green Incorporated. We paid a lot for our bathroom tiling job and went with big local company. They did awful job on the floor and not the greatest on the walls (in some areas) We ended up getting a full refund on the floor. So your comment about the price is very inaccurate. you don't always get what you pay for.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><md>Don’t give him any more money. This is more than sloppy. I couldn’t live with any of this. The whole thing needs to be redone or money back. No job is perfect. I have found this out, but this is totally unacceptable. If he he reputable he will fix it or he can get a bad rap and you certainly can make that happen. A while back this happened to me and it was someone who had done excellent work for us before. He tore out the entire bathroom and started over.
