I'm a big fan of corralling interesting objects on a tray and/or placing an interesting item on a stack of books. Always include something living (small plant, a vase with a few flowers, etc.). As far as the "interesting item" goes, I like something guests (and you!) will feel drawn to touch. For example, a beautiful kaleidoscope, a small snow globe, unique candy dish, a bowl full of stones in different colors, a collection of skeleton keys, or even a cool magic eight ball!
