Should I paint wood trim?

Our family room has beautiful wood trim, but lately I have been wondering if painting the trim would "brighten" up the room. There is a lot of it! Mantel, crown molding, French doors leading to a Florida Room and closet doors in hall.

What should I do and what color would work? Also, I am thinking that if I do paint the trim, then the wall color would need to be changed? Thanks for any advice!
