Looks like slug damage. Is it growing outside? If so, have you looked at night for any activity?

that looks like the oldest leaf.. and the pattern might suggest the leaf was rolled.. just emerging ... if the injury is back in time.. the bug might be gone.. as i see no damage on newer leaves ... or it happened overnight as you suggest ...

remove that leaf.. wash the rest.. insert in mouth in the format you prefer ...

as you say.. you cant really treat food ... after thorough inspection ... a few holes do not make it inedible ....

also.. if outdoors ... you could have a cut worm.. which are usually found in the top half inch of soil ... not very far from the trunk ...scratch around like a chicken.. and see if you can find it ... google images....
