The time changes this coming Saturday! Blech, I hate it. Why shouldn't Dali be on the screened in porch?

Morning all. Carpet guys arrived an hour early this morning super keen and eager to go. Caught me in the shower. At least this time I got guys who speak English............... well 2 of them do, the third one is Scottish and I can't understand a word he says his brogue is very thick. Nice to listen to though.

Bobbi, I'm glad you are revising your life. I get concerned at times that you are getting obsessive about things and that comes from not take proper breaks. The fact you feel selfish or nervous of trying something like this or if you don't do things is a sign of obsession. The more time you spend in the house too the more you find you want/need to do and the more dissatisfied you can become.

Do your absolute basics first thing - washing, washing up, bathroom, make bed and general tidy then look at deep cleaning a couple of rooms a day to work through the house in 4 days, and like Kutchie, take Fridays for a swish right through the house ready for the weekend. Weekend is enjoy and do things with R, even if it is gardening or house projects, it is doing things together and breaking your routine.

Darzy - I know exactly what you mean about it taking all day to do something if you have all day. That is me to a T.

Those sinkholes are scary things. They seem to be popping up (or down) around the world. I don't remember hearing about them even 10 years ago, are things being reported more now or are they something new and why. I wonder if we are taking too much out of the Earth. I read yesterday that Florida is prone to them because so much of the State is sand and sandy soils cause them. The way the article was written it sounded like sinkholes happen every other day - that being the case why are they not reported or do they only do so when someone's home disappears.

Norm - can you enlighten us at all??
Thanks for the great advise, roo! Me? Obsessive? Surely you jest :))

Glad your carpet layers arrived, and I guess better early than late. On time is nice, tho. How many rooms are you doing, I can't remember. Are you ever going to take pics for us? We need to SEE your rooms!
Bobbi - I'm not joking - I've thought about it for a long time now, might be at the root of your not sleeping too.

Been hard to take pics when nothing is actually finished and it is hard to get things finished when we are constantly upending rooms to work in them. The painting took up so much time too, it certainly didn't help things plus I couldn't paint AND get out to shop for things I need. Hoping to have so much more free time now, and with the carpet down, everything will be in a forward motion from now on. Hopefully won't have any more tradies here either after today, they really halt progress too.

At least I don't feel guilty being on here today, I'm stuck in my bedroom - although I can get out the back door and walk around the house but there isn't much I can do at the other end of the house either. I can't even move on with the curtains as the dining room has extra furniture in it and I can barely get in the door. I had to move everything in the lounge room so the guys could get the stored carpet out.
I know you're not joking, roo! And you're right. I'm a control freak and not having the house under control every minute of everyday bothers me, could be why I'm not sleeping.

Forward progress is so wonderful, isn't it? When you reach the stage where all the prep is done and there's nothing left but putting it all back. Sigh of relief! Will you start your kitchen this year, or wait? Personally I would have to wait because I could only take so much chaos but you handle it better than me.
Hey Roo!!!! I'm glad your carpeting is going down babydoll! Must be a great relief!

bob, hence the word "screen"!!! She is a puppy and if she WANTS to get out, I'm sure she can tear through a screen! That's the last thing I need right now! yikes! Nala, knows how to open the screen door. She has the cat door on the kitchen/backdoor and then she nudges the screen door and she can open it from the outside too. She puts her paw underneath and pulls it out and sneaks in. She's great about it!
roo, that was good color advise you gave the lady looking for a wall color for her kids study. I never think about cool and warm colors, I only think about what goes with what, but you're right!
Bobbi, I really feel like a broken record at times. Just gave similar advice on another issue. I guess it is because I have one extremely hot room and one extremely cold gloomy room that I really understand the need for this to be factored into colour choice.

It is funny isn't it, you wouldn't think just chatting here could tell so much about a person - not like a face to face encounter would. I have read so much about a lot of you, that I can almost picture you and how you live. I'm wondering now if your control freak approach is why your doctor thought ADD. Very similar symptoms.

Carpet guys have just finished and done a wonderful job and they were sooooooo nice and very respectful of everything in the house - not like the other guys. They put a little chip in the skirting paint in one corner of the kids' room but came and told us and apologised. What a refreshing change!!! They were wondering why they had been told they absolutely HAD to do our carpet so I told them what had happened last time and while they were horrified they weren't at all surprised. They have no time for the other layers either and the main guy, who I thought was Scottish was actually Austrian - how the hell I missed that I don't know - said he had repeatedly told the owner that he had to keep like nationalities together, these other guys just don't understand Aussie ways and values. Everyone bends over backwards to try not to be racist, but boy there are times you just don't get a choice.

BH has already been to Church and got the flatpack shelving for the walk in, so it looks like all systems go today.

MP - isn't it amazing how ingenious cats can be, dogs just don't seem to stop and think, they are too busy aiming for the end result and are like a bull in a china shop. My cats could open sliding doors, they just worried the door enough till they could wriggle their paw in and as soon as they could get their nose in they wriggled till the whole head went in and the body followed. There was no keeping them out of anywhere.
Bobbi, sorry I forgot - I doubt we will be doing the kitchen this year. I feel we will be restoring and reorganising everything for the next few months in readiness for DD's visit in June and I really want to take my time with that, go shopping for things, and tidy up a lot of loose ends. By the time she leaves in July it will only be a month till BH goes away and he won't be back till just after Christmas, by which time the Germans will be here till the end of January. I might call in builders while BH is away and get some quotes, then again I might totally veg out and relax.
roo...yipeee your carpet is in! I'm glad you like it and the guys taking care installing is an added bonus. Yes, we'd all like to see your pictures when you finalize. I'd love new flooring myself (our carpet needs replaced in hall and bedrooms) but not in the budget this year. I'm really considering (and have almost talked myself into) porcelin tile that looks like hardwood floors next go 'round. I'm one of those "tile or hardwood floor" dilemma people! It seems everyone suggests on HOUZZ hardwood floors but we have that in the kitchen and family room (engineered hardwood) and it really looks like too much "character" after 15 yrs. Oh well, I'll "worry about that tomorrow". :) Dogs, grandkids and wet feet are not good for hardwood floors.

I have spring fever but I'm bummed because the 4 new palm trees in our front yard may have died with our unusual frost. Now they look like stick trees. :( I'm hoping the nursery will replace or cut us a break on replacing. Lost a Pigmy Date Palm too. wahhhh.

    Bobbi..."Wine a bit, you'll feel better" :)
Ohhhhh, it is so nice when others feel my warm fuzzies. I just love how the house has suddenly become quiet too, I really can't stand that echoing of bare boards. Darcy, my old one was 45 years old, so I think it was well due for retirement.

Those timber looking floor tiles are amazing. Bobbi is in love with them too. Price isn't good here though - $97 a sq metre. They look great and are easy to keep clean but too much for my aching body. We are barefooted here most of the time too, actually I find it really hard to do housework with shoes on, I seem to have 3 feet and constantly trip myself up.

Ez, no BH (Boof Head or in desperate times Bloody Hopeless) hasn't gone walkabout yet, thought he was going later this month but have heard no more about it and doesn't seem to be panicked about getting things done. Commonsense must have prevailed or LAdd has told him she doesn't want him. German DD banned him for 2 years after his last visit there but it looks like that trip is still definitely on leaving mid August. DD having a trip away somewhere then comes home for a few weeks and then goes to Italy for another holiday. She wouldn't let him go on the first trip but has OK'd the second so is timing his arrival accordingly. He desperately wants to do Oktoberfest. I just have to make sure he takes his gout medication this time, he won't be told he isn't a kid anymore and SIL and mates happily lead him astray. Last time he drank so much in the first 3 days, I got an SOS for the meds but they got stuck in customs and he didn't get them for a month.

Anyway, must go and give my beautiful new carpet a vacuum to get all the bitty bits up and then put my lounge room back together - properly this time so I can measure up for a bookcase I want.

So I got a couple of photos before the damned battery died again!!! Not brilliant but at least the colours haven't come out too bad. The first is dd's bedroom which is the same colour as my bedroom and the cushion fabric which will be curtains and coverlet. The second is the kids' GREEN bedroom with a pillowslip that matches the doona cover. It actually isn't that strong in real life.

Just given everything a vacuum, I just feel like I have moved into a brand new home and with everything emptied out and aired out, it really feels great. Honestly, I feel like a kid at Christmas and it is only March!!! Ez - I must grow some lavender, definitely a must in the house.

roo, you can take photos on your ipad and you must be relieved that carpet is in. Looks real nice, what a ton of work you have done over the last few months.....wanna come over?

Linda, CONGRATS!!!! please tell us all about the new digs.

Can someone please tell e why OLLD might be changing.
Thanks ez, don't know about lilac, never thought of them. That room faces south so the garden never sees the sun and can get very damp over long periods and they do like full sun. Actually a lilac would grow way too tall too, the windows look out into my courtyard. I mostly grow stuff in pots - the stag is absolutely loving it there.

I do have another plant that grows easily from cuttings but I've no idea of the name of it, I thought it was called a Hawaiian Lily but it looks nothing like any photos I can find. It has really long tubular flowers and they smell lovely at night. I had thought of putting one in a pot and growing it as a standard, might do that yet, when I have time to attend to it regularly.

Lavender's main attribute is it's relaxing and sleep inducing perfume. I love having it in the bedroom, but it is really hard to get a good oil, some are so cheap. I think I will grow a few plants - actually they could go good in my little garden/courtyard outside my bedroom. You have given me an idea, thanks.

Hi, olldcan, yes I was relying on my iPod a lot for photos and I worked out if I emailed them to myself then I could download onto the computer and upload here. I'm not getting accurate colours on it though, my bedroom wall kept coming out brown. I so wish, I would be off to LA, at least, at the drop of a hat, but still so much to do before June. I'm being really pedantic about everything, just nothing is getting shoved away to forget about or think about - use it or lose it is my motto.

Bit of idle chit chat this morning (I think, or was it yesterday? - my brain is done in) about the fact that OLLD now has roosters so we thought of adding the extra L (for Lads). Nothing really decided. Put your opinion in. That was why I raised the quorum question.

Evening all, about to hit the hay but just checking in. Roo, my SIL grows fabulous lavender in her garden in Gundaroo. It likes slightly dry conditions and alkaline? soil I think. I know I cannot grow it here. My neighbor is French and he loves it , but neither of us have been able to get it to survive the winter and the soil here.
We do get lot so of lilacs here though. Never did see them in Sydney/?
I miss the agapanthus, jasmine, and gardenia which I mentioned. Your new carpet and paint looks great!
Thanks Julie. I'm wondering if lilacs grow here, I have a feeling I have seen the odd one or two, maybe it is because they grow so big. I have a feeling they might grow up the mountains. I know lavender grows well in Tassie so it might like the colder weather too. I will check out the local nurseries. If it likes drier conditions, well I can forget to water, but the way the gardener in the sky has been sending down the rain lately, I could be facing a losing battle.

I used to have a border of aggies around the bottom part of my garden and did they thrive, the flowers were bigger than dinner plates but they were taking over so I dug them out. Will just keep a couple of clumps I can control. I can't handle jasmine - way too heavy for me, but I do have some jasmine trees, they grow like weeds too, but the perfume on them is amazing and only at night. Gardenias I have everywhere and two outside my bedroom - love them. I also have a mock orange or it might be known as a Mexican Orange Blossom, sadly doesn't flower for long but it is very delicate. Took me years to get that, we had one growing where I grew up and I always loved it but whenever I went to nurseries looking for it, no one even knew what I was talking about.

I like name OLLD the way it is, people who can't comment for whatever reason for a while, will easily be able to re-join in convo if it stays the same. I'm sure the roosters have no problem being but a few in the henhouse hahahaha. Hey, maybe we should all wear a pair of chicken glasses when on OLLD...... kiddin!!

Roo..... to answer you question about the sink hole.......Florida for the most part sits on a huge long laywer of carbonate type rock (limestone), also known as the Florida aquifer......surface drainage, underground water movement and urban draw down of the aquifer causes voids to be formed and quite often the over covering of clay and loomey soils eventuall lose their underpining support and poof.........you get a sink hole. If you fly over Florida you still see the landscape dotted with small to large round looking lakes.......these are older sink holes that have filled with water. Most of the lakes in centeral Florida are old sink holes........in the late 80's there was a sink hole that formed in Winter Park that swallowed most of an exotic car dealership back lot.....there was about a dozen high priced cars that went down that hole..........now it's a lake.

A couple of years after that and a couple of blocks from the design firm I was working for, there was a mixed use speculation project that was going in a couple of blocks from Rolins College ( again Winter Park), they were pounding pilings in due to the poor soil conditions in preparations for a grade beam foundation.....they had about half of the pilings in and had just started another one. They got about 10 hitson it and then it just disappeared into the ground........just gone. This was a 50' concrete pre-stressed piling.... just dropped out of sight. They brought in ground penetrating siesmic equipmnt and did a complete site graph and found out that a mere 15'-20' of soil separated the foundation from a rather large cavernous void beneath the site.........I don't recall how many thousands of cubic yards of gravel and concrete were dumped in to fill the void, but it was a lot...... I mean weeks of just a constant stream of gravel trucks and concrete trucks lined up.........they ended up putting in a structural floating plate slab (24" thick concrete slabe with top and bottom reinforcing mats of #8's and #10's in both directions at 6" o.c.). Ended up being a really nice building, retail and offices on the ground floor with residential on the 2nd and 3rd floors, but it sat empty for at least 2 years that I know of and the developer went belly up.

That's one of the reasons I will never move back to Florida.......1) It's too crowded and just getting more crowded. I remember when there was actually undeveloped land between Orlando, Kissimmiee and St. Cloud, now it's all developed and if you don't watch close, you'll miss the signs that designate the city limits of each. South Florida is almost continuous development from Homestead (south of Miami) to Vero Beach (about 4 hours driving time).........and all those people have to have water..........the aquifer level has dropped to the point that many coastal areas are getting salt water intrussion now........and with that comes sink holes. 2. It's just plain to danged flat for me now
  • 13 years ago
roo, today I was at the store at 2:30am, stayed until 1:30pm, home and in bed by 2:30 pm and slept until almost 6pm. It's 9:40pm here now, normally I'd be in bed, that extra long nap has messed me up. Why not take a quick walk around the block, I know you don't drink coffee but is there another beverage you can treat yourself to.
olldcan - actually water often peps me up. Just had a glass and did some vacuuming and almost normal again. I think it definitely is about moving more. Today got off to a bad start too with the carpet guys here at 8am and there was next to nothing I could do so probably catching up on the computer got me lazy and really cemented the bad start. Once I'm out of sync for the day, it is hard to do a U-Turn.

roo lazy.....ya right. You have more get up and go than lots of people I know. Somedays I feel guilty for not hustling more, especially when I read all you've accomplished.
Gosh Kutchie, thanks, that is so interesting. Really, even though they did all that thickness of cement, if the diameter of the sink hole was larger, then there is nothing to stop the whole lot getting swallowed is there. Obviously too, the land is very low lying - pretty much at sea level for the salt water to penetrate like that.

Remind me not to go to Florida. Hurricanes were bad enough but sink holes too.........!!!!!!

All the development from Orlando to St. Cloud or Homestead to Vero Beach - what type of development is it? Four hours driving is a lot of distance. Are sustainable towns and cities actually developing where people have access to employment and business opportunities, are people doing massive commutes or are they all retirees wanting to soak up the sun?
Darzy, I found a similar flooring today and immediately thought of Bobbi. I was in a hurry looking for something else and forgot where I found it.

Gosh can, I don't feel that energetic at all. I get a lot done, but I always feel I could have done a lot more, especially comparing with what I did in my younger days. I used to be up at 4am to take the joeys to swimming training, back home at 7.30, put washing on, get breakfast, start cleaning house, take joeys to school, do another hour of housework then play tennis for 4 or 5 hours 3 days a week or help out at school, organise fund raising activities, go to meetings, do shopping, major projects at home (I made all the joey's clothes) before picking the joeys up from school, fixing them afternoon tea and preparing dinner, then it was back to swimming training till 7pm, home, finish cooking dinner clean up the afternoon mess, supervise homework and fall into bed. Didn't have microwaves in those days to make cooking easier either.

Just got a call from my gym wanting to know where I have been, am I all right, do I want a new programme done???? THAT DOES IT I am really getting back into it ............... next week. I get so much more energised when I go.
Whew...olldroo..I'm exhausted just reading about your day! I joined a gym once and paid for a year and visited a half dozen times. I gave away our treadmill recently and hoping I'll use the bike more this spring. : ) I've hung onto the rowing machine...but is still in our storage area..not easily accessible. Soon....
You're exhausted, I can't believe I actually lived it. Maybe that is why I'm so worn out now.

Rowing machine was the first thing I bought, it ended up in the attic till I tossed it and bought a bike thinking I could pedal and watch TV. Neighbours didn't like listening to my TV shows and BH kept insisting on fiddling with with and broke it, so it went out. BH brought it back in insisting he could fix it, and didn't so on one of his o/s trips I got rid of it again, which upset him so the next cleanup he found another one, brought it home and found it was broken. After a year of I can fix it, it went in the cleanup too. I didn't do the treadmill. I was at dd's one time and they had a cleanup happening, it is a generally a young area, and honestly, every second house had an exercise bike out for collection.

When I was caring for mum here, we used to watch a bit of daytime TV together, she liked to watch it but wanted company, so I couldn't use the time to sneak off and do important things. Anyway don't know if your daytime TV is like ours but every second ad is Guthy Renker or some other place selling amazing exercise equipment that is going to have you physically perfect in 28 days or your money back. Just everything folded and went away "under the bed". It used to crack us up ad after ad of things that went "under the bed". I don't think even floorspace under a king king sized bed would have been enough room.

    Hi Roo!

YES I am an Aussie! Well done on your super sleuthing! :)

I am in Melbourne... Where are you? Clearly not Melbourne, you've had rain and we've had nothing but sun. It's a week over 30 and apparently another week over 30 this week.

Actually, I lie... We did have a day of rain a week or so ago.

Better than when it's a week over 40 degrees... I remember a couple years ago when we had those awful bushfires that it was 45 degrees for a week.... And we had our air conditioner sitting in a box in the hallway, waiting to be installed. Cruel.
Wow! That was a whole lot of reading, I think I had 84 emails or something like that. Roo, you are a bundle of energy! And I love love love your carpet and I am seriously jealous :)). Congratulations on a job well done. If you had to do it all over again, what would you change?

Darzy, that floor is gorgeous. I will show R but he is dead set on keeping the oak the way it is. We shall see. I like the dark stain much better! Thanks for posting that pic.
Thanks Bobbi - approval from you "experts" means a lot to me. So far, nothing, I think I have thought so long over things, made all the mistakes before I started, and having all the great photos here helps so much, dare I say it, I have no regrets over anything, except maybe not getting the painter in earlier, although it would have more than doubled the cost and BH probably would have had a fit. I think he needed the painting we did to convince him.

I found a couple of the floors I saw, I definitely think your flipper was coloured blind or used whatever he could get cheap. I think the second one has too much contrast, but definitely the darker the tile the darker the timber should be.

Roo, I figured the painter would be the one thing you'd reconsider! Would have been great except for the cost, of course.

Actually it was the prev owner who had the kitchen floor installed and she definitely had more money than talent or brains. Of the three pics, I like the floor in the third one the best. The blue in my floor really dominates the kitchen/dining room and limits colors and styles I'd like to bring in. A more neutral color tile would have been better, IMO.
I'm glad we did what we did in one way, I probably needed to prove to myself it was getting beyond me.

That third photo is gorgeous isn't it. The whole house looks stunning - bet some mega $$$ were spent there. One time I would have said the blue would have limited you, but there are so many shades of colours these days and so many are being used with blues, you have a lot more choice. Look at it this way too - yours is unique, everyone else seems to be playing it safe where your's makes a statement. OK you probably would rather it shut up, but I think you are conquering it.
Thanks, roo, I appreciate hearing that from such a color savvy gal!

Just trying to keep you positive, when you get too negative about things that is when you can't see the woods for the trees.

Heck, I did a reply to thislittlehouse and it has gone!!! Just hate that.

Thislittlehouse - I am in Sydney, if you promise not to hold that against me and I won't call you a Mexican - teehee. Which footy club do you follow? I love AFL just wish the games were on free-to-air TV so I can watch them. I sort of follow Geelong but am quite openminded. The Swans are fine now they got rid of Garry Hall. Chat more later, I must get to bed. Do hope you stay around. We have an expat Aussie here too - Julie.

Bobbi...personally I think you have done an excellent job in your kithcen. The colors are fresh, the room is cohesive and it looks inviting. Not many people could have put it together the way you have.

Right this moment - today - dark stain is the 'in' thing, but dark floors will soon be a thing of the past. People grow weary of dark much quicker than of light colors. I can guarantee you that oak and other lighter woods will soon be in vogue again and all those that have changed theirs will lamenting the fact . Your floor is very nice and it is unique. You can pair dozens upon dozens of colors with the blues in your floor. You have already proven your talent.

Anyway, I really think it is time to sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Bobbi - your kitchen floor makes more sense to me now that you said previous owner, not flipper, had it done. I couldn't understand how a flipper who was so hesitant to do any real work would do that much work for the floor.

I like the idea of the tile inlaid in the wood grid, but understand how the colors in yours really limit you, especially if blue isn't your all time, one and only favorite color

Janis, thank you so much. I don't mind the tile/wood combo. At first it was challenging to find one cleaner for both surfaces but I found one so I'm good. When we first moved in, the blue was dark gray. Many weekends of stripping wax and dirt, and using a Sharpie on the grout has made it better :))
