I don't know what I did wrong with the seeds then. Maybe I will try again this year. I did see that Annies Annuals had it, but the shipping is about $25.00 to ship to my zip code. That is a bit steep for me. Thank you for the info.

Thank you for the input. I think I am going to try them again from seed, since I cannot find them online where the shipping is not too expensive.

Have you tried wintersowing them? It is too late now (I think winter is long gone!), but I wintersowed a few seeds in February, and they sprouted. I hope they make it!

I might try that next year. I really want some, they are so pretty. I hope yours makes it. Did you have to nick the seeds or anything?

Nope. I just put them in dirt inside a milk jug. :) Check out the wintersowing forum here or look for the group on FB. It is an awesome way to start more difficult seeds. :)

I tried winter sowing several years ago and had some successes. I will definitely try them now and see if I can get some to sprout. Thank you for the info

One of my seeds sprouted. Yay! Now if it will stay alive.

I came from California and had California Poppies naturalized in our yard. When I Googled your plant, the first site I found suggested that it grew well with those poppies. I had been in CA zone 9. The humidity is low, the soil is alkaline, the summers are dry, and it barely freezes in the winter. Those are hardly the conditions here in zone 7.

Cin, I hope it does well! Mine are trying to grow out of the bottle they are in. I am going to put them in the ground next week. :)

Chas, thanks for the heads up. I have never had luck with CA poppies here. I hope the cerinthe does well. There is only one way to find out. :)

I grew Cerinthe once, a long time ago -- it grew just fine but the colors were very washed out, even in spring, and nothing at all like the gorgeous photos on the internet. I assumed that was b/o our heat but it could have been soil pH. If you have better results than I did, I'd like to know so I can try again.

i grew them one year, with much success. they do like the cool weather, definitely, and can handle light frost but can't deal with heavy frost. so, it's tricky. i didn't find their colors washed out until it got hot, and then they definitely went downhill. i will do them again - they were really beautiful. so, you can treat them like nasturtiums or calendulas - get them going in late summer and enjoy them for the fall til it gets cold enough to kill them, or get them going in early spring and protect them through the heaviest frosts and they will be beautiful til it gets very hot, and they'll decline into nothing. the year i did it, i had them going in spring, but i believe they started from seed i tossed into my big planters in late fall or early winter. they grow pretty fast once they get going.

I'm about a half zone colder than you so maybe that was my problem, i.e. too narrow a window between the last hard frost and hot weather. Now that I have the greenhouse I should try again.

Does putting them in part shade help?
