Yes it can if too cold. We've got some bitter cold temps coming, and would suggest bringing them indoors...

They do stay indoors when it is cold, or no sunshine outside....

RedSun you are in NJ, do you always plant your tomatoes last week of May? I'm in PA and I plant mine first week of May. They seem to do fine. I get my ripe fruits first (mostly) or second week of July. Why do you plant so late.? Just curious.

sulani62, I planted tomatoes various times over the years. I do not care to be the earliest because of the work involved. In 2013, I purchased the seedlings from local nursery and by mid July, the plants already grew over the top of my concrete wire cage.

Last year, it was my first time growing my own seeds. I started seeds by late March, then transplanted the seedlings by mid May. The plants just sat there, doing nothing. I only got one or two tomatoes off my Cherokee Purple tomatoes. Then I dug some volunteer tomato seedlings and planted them in early July. I was lucky that most of them are cherry tomatoes and I harvested a lot of them. The few large fruit plants did not have time to set tomatoes.

I'll closely monitor the soil temperature to see if I can set them out earlier this year. Or I can try to grow bigger seedlings instead. I know it is more work this way.

Yeah, they look fine. I plant mine out at the same time incidentally. I would say that, in the UK, bell peppers are usually started quite a bit earlier than tomatoes because they need a longer growing - 20 weeks in the UK...and our seasons tend to be shorter and cooler than most parts of the US. Sowing times, peppers: 1st week of Feb, tomatoes: 14th march, transplant out first week of June (horrible memories of late June16th frost and total sweetcorn death).,I always grow a few early potato leaf types such as Stupice or Matina. Expect my first tomato by end of July.

Campanula - do you actually get any peppers outdoors? I only grow chillies and they spend all their lives under glass.

I haven't got a tomato in years due to blight. But I still sow and plant them for the exercise ;-)
