Quite a few people do just that. They dig, separate and replant in the spring. Bulb size is not normally up to fall planted standards, but then as a backup it is pretty dependable for a lot of folks. It might pay you to wait a bit for the ground to completely thaw and warm up a little. Just treat the garlic shoots like you would commercial onion plants.

Thanks. I ended up transplanting them regardless because I was too excited to wait for an answer:). I have to say, I really like the control of planting sprouted ones. If the bulb sizes aren't even comparable then I'll go back to fall planting. I can't believe how many worms are at the surface. The ground is quite workable in the sun so I went at it. Ugh, to be crouching for 90 minutes and then standing up, wow, it's been awhile.
