How much seating do you need? I agree that your chairs are oversized. Truth is you have too many pieces that are too large to do anything. Try putting the TV against the stair wall, move the white chair to it's place and consider finding a new home for the other chair.

Lucky you to have a FP and 2 tall windows for natural light. You are probably feeling cramped, so the goal is to make the room feel more spacious, working with what you have and need, but having less things to distract the eye. It helps that you have a pale solid color on your sofa. Having 2 chairs instead of a love seat is smart because it gives you more arrangement options.

First, position the biggest piece, your sofa, on the longest wall. This may not even be a real wall if you have an open concept Great room. You should have enough room behind the sofa to put your 2 side tables, either next to each other like a sofa table or behind each sofa arm.

Move the TV directly opposite the sofa, not on an angle. For best viewing, the distance from seating is 3 times the tv screen size (12 feet from a 48 inch TV screen). At 14x13, you have enough room.

Move the better chair so it is perpendicular to the sofa, to create a conversation area.

Place the coffee table so it is 16-18 inches from sofa and chair. This means everyone can reach it so you may not need a side table between them...but you do have room for it or room for the floor lamp.

If there is any space for the second chair without moving the other pieces, good. Try it between the TV and stair case. If it is further than 7 feet from the other seating, consider it to be a separate seating zone. If it won't fit easily in the room, move it to another room.

Now for lighting. Hang the window drapes straight down so they let in more natural light. Or replace them with sheers for a lighter look, if privacy is not a concern. Place table lamps on the side tables, and and the floor lamp where you need another light source.

Next, address the accessories (the room "jewelry"). For the warm weather, move the plants to the fireplace hearth to brighten up that area and make the most use of all that space.

Corral the things on the coffee table onto a tray.

Lean the ladder in front of the far window with a side table layered in front of it- or move the ladder to behind the floor lamp - or lean it against the stair wall corner - or move it to another room.

Lastly, hang your art with the middle of the picture being about 5 feet above floor level or 6-8 inches above a table.

I can't tell you how much I appreciate your response! I usually have the couch on the longest wall which is where all of the artwork is hanging and move tv farther into the same corner which leaves me enough space for one end table by the stairway. But the TV looks cramped in that corner. I leave the ugly chair where it is now by the stairway and the large chair across from the couch right by the fireplace. I don't really like the couch where it is now because it's a smaller space and it's also an open area to my dining room (I will send a picture of the area) but I like a change once in a while!! Was hoping someone could help me with a better solution. And also I am planning on removing the ugly lazyboy for a new one soon!

I think I'd put the couch on the long wall (where the TV is now.) Put the TV on the stairs wall and the chairs on the no wall side of the fireplace.

This is the way I would arrange room, I tried with sofa on back wall and I like this better. Also tried TV on long wall.

Get your new recliner for in corner by FP and other chair next to it with lamp, floor lamp behind recliner. TV on stairway wall. You need a longer and lower console for TV 25% longer than TV size.

Keep sofa where it is but get a table behind it too hid the back and add interest.

A larger rug would help 8x10 and get one with your accent colors in it.

Take the tie backs off the curtains, it is dating the rooms. Also take off everything on the long wall and re-hang after you get your furniture in place.
