I was going to say the same thing as Linda! But if you really despise it, I see that the two chairs you have look like mid-century modern ones. Perhaps going in that direction for the fireplace would pull the room together. Research fireplaces from that era and see what strikes your fancy.

Sorry I'm not a pro, but I would not leave that fireplace as is. I like the other elements in the room, and as a rule, I do love natural elements and stone fireplaces (I have a stone fireplace myself) but that particular rock is too jagged, too rustic, too busy. I don't think it suits a typical home. Perhaps a Rainforest Cafe. If you have the budget for this project or are willing to diy, I'd frame over and recover it. One intermediate step could be painting the *entire* thing to see if that softens up/mutes its busy-ness. Either very light or very dark. But my gut says recover it in something else.

Looking at your furniture I see you're not the moosehead type. That's the type of fireplace this is , overwhelming.
I would remove the whole structure and look up mid century designs to get ideas as what fits with your style.

I like it too. I like what the other commenters suggested and would also add that a tall green plant on the right side of the fireplace might soften it a bit more and add some good height to that side.

If you want a compromise I would keep the rock wall and add a piece of art to it then smooth over the hearth. That will give it more of a mid century rustic feel than pure caveman

I vote to leave it also. I like it. I like the idea of artwork added over the brick to soften it. I just searched "tall stone fireplace with artwork" and some cool ideas popped up.

I know this is an old thread but IMO not a fan of the lava but an a total fan of your hanging light. Where did you find that gem?
