There are some hostas that like sun. If you don't get suggestions here, ask or do a search on the Hosta forum for suggestions of those that like sun, which tend to be ones with relatively thick leaves, and some of the yellow ones. Some of the denser perennial geraniums make good coverage for bulb foliage as do peonies planted just in front of them. If you like daylilies, they are one of the classics to plant with daffodils to cover the foliage. If you have room, some smaller shrubs such as one of the smaller Hydrangea paniculata like Bobo would work. H. paniculata likes sun unlike H. macrophylla like Nikko Blue. One of the short Duetzias would work such as Chardonnay Pearls, Nikko, or Yuki Cherry Blossom. (Hmm - never noticed that Nikko was used both for Hydrangeas and Deutzia - need to look that up to figure out the background . . . )

PS Nikko Deutzia was named by C.G. Hollett of Greenbank Nursery in England late 70's approximately. I haven't found a source for the Nikko blue hydrangea name.

I had the same thing happen a few years ago. The first year the Hostas burned badly. The next year not so much. The will adapt a bit to their new situation and you have to give them lots of water to make up for the lack of shade. I've planted several small trees to make up for the big one that died, including a Kousa Dogwood, a Stewartia and a Holly (which hasn't done well). I've also used some tuteur structures to give more shade. And last year I sowed some tall sunflowers to help out as well.

Every little bit of shade helps.

I'm trying to remove a couple awesome looking host's into large pots as decor. Any pictures of what they look like when just coming up and soil ideas. Thanks in advance.

I don't have a pic, but if they are common hosta they should be coming up about now. Look for clumps of spikes. Some of my "special" hosta come up later in the season, but look the same. Check out the Hosta forum, there are probably a few pix of emerging hosta.
