There is an alternative - Richlite. I wanted honed granite (i.e. matte surface) in my kitchen but was worried about staining. I was more than thrilled to find Richlite and 7+ years later I am still loving it! It is very hard (used for cutting boards and marine parks). I could put hot pans on it as well. It is a paper based product and green to boot!
