It is a fast grower for me. Rather than up-potting, why not quarter it and pot? Those pots will b full in I year. I think floppiness is the characteristic of that cultivar, very similar to other that is completely erect. Quarter it like you'd quarter a watermelon, meaning not delicately.

Yes, you can separate as much as you want. Leaning isn't normal, keep in bright enough light and it should stay upright. When you replant, keep the soil at the same level on the plant as it was before. A few rocks around the base can keep things upright until the roots have anchored the plants well.

Good info here already, my two cents...

You could split it into two or three clumps and pot separately, but at the same time I would cut those tallest leaves out of the clump, especially if it's going to be outdoors in the wind. If the root ball is REALLY thick, splitting is easy... unpot, turn it on it's side, and cut the root ball vertically into two or three pieces. I actually use a hand saw, be safe if you use a big knife. There will be some collateral damage to some offsets with this method, but if you plan where you're going to cut, damage should be minimal.

Separating some of the smaller, younger growths into a couple of pots and discarding the old clump would be the easiest thing to do. Since it's from a friend, if there are sentiments about this plant I would keep the original old clump until you're sure the younger plants have rooted and are growing well.

As Tiffany said, plant offsets or the clumps at their original level. A little deeper is okay if it stabilizes in the new soil better, but don't overdo it.

It does look like it has needed brighter light than it was getting, hence the floppy, very tall leaves.

I've never had to cut Sans roots to separate them. I do that every spring. They just fall apart from each other.
