Not something I've ever seen but I'd maybe start looking at Mahonias or Berberis. Can you tell us more about it? Where is it growing? Can you provide a picture of the whole plant?

I'd say you're exactly right. I'm a big fan of the Osmanthus'. A neat genus. I'd love to get my hands on the straight species, Osmanthus heterophyllus.

Oh dear - I was way off. Never seen a berry on an Osmanthus. RHS only lists one supplier and that's in Eire. Must be very unusual here.

Heh, that fruit reminds of honeyberry, Lonicera caerulea. The rest of the plant sure doesn't though!

I grow about 5 different kinds of Osmanthus but this one is too spiny even for me!

Another one laden with fruit. I took pic last Saturday nr the Bartholdi garden in Wash DC. Never tasted the fruits, are they edible? Notice mature foliage is spineless.
