I have the same problem. I am trying to figure out if these green single strips are grass or allium or something else. They look less like grass the longer I let them grow. I also do the smell test. I know someone is videotaping me and I'll end up on tv smelling my plants! I break off a tip, crush it in my fingers and inhale.

I'm glad I didn't pull them (all, at least) because they turned out to be drumstick allium! Now I'd like to know when I can move them. They are yellowing from the bottom up, and the flowers are going to seed. i like them but they need to be planted amid taller plants and not flopping into a path.

My drumstick allium bloomed and I just cut off the drying heads to preserve the seeds. My experience with transplanting allium drumstick is to move them with the dirt. If you can take them as a "chunk" and get quite a bit of dirt with the group of bulbs, they transplant well. If you want to pull each one out separately you probably want to wait until fall. I planted allium seeds two years ago (drumstick) and I have the green strips that look like grass. I'm waiting for the day they bloom. However, I'm sure people are videotaping me, too, as I smell them. I smell anything I think might be monarda (minty), that awful weed that smells like Vicks and Skunk mixed together, flowering onions (another that looks like grass), basil and coriander.

Onion grass and allium both smell like onion, don't they?
