cedar shake stain

We have cedar shake in the gable of our new home. I really LOVE the warmth cedar shake adds to a home, but we are struggling to find the right stain. we are leaning towards just leaving it natural. any suggestions on a light and bright stain or if leaving it natural is best? the first picture is no stain and the second is with the stain. the third is the sample we chose. the stain on our house is WAY darker than the sample we chose and we are not happy with it. :(

the middle in the sample pic is natural cedar and we chose the sample to the right. it did not come out looking natural at all sadly. the house is not complete. the porch will have mountain stone on it and there will be cedar posts. the front door and cedar posts will also be stained.

This is confusing. You've asked about stain yet the house has already had the shakes stained. You can't go backwards and lighten now if that is the question. FYI I always use oil stain on cedar, waterbased does not treat the wood as it should be IMO. Go with Cabot or similar with additnl. UV protection. Untreated cedar will turn gray left as is.

yes. sorry for the confusion. we are in the process of working out actually removing the shakes and starting over. :( not excited about it, but also feel that the stain sample did not represent the stain that came out. so I guess in asking opinions on what would look best with our house. leaving it natural or recommendations for a light stain. thank you.

PS: cedar shingles should ideally be dipped/saturated in the finish, rather than painted. Always test your color first. Oil will always increase the depth of the color to some degree. PPS what a terrible waste! If you can remove the first shingles and salveage they can be used to roof a shed or outbuilding. Or just donate to habitat. (We put leftover shingles on a little post & beam style gatehouse which I love).

Thank you for the helpful advice! yes, it is a waste and a bummer. good idea to salvage them aomehow. wondering if our builder could even use them for another house. thank you.
