Carpet must be removed....then you lay a new floor. LVP = Luxury Vinyl Plank. I have many, many, many home gyms who have used a cork floating floor in lieu of rubber matting. The rubber flooring (1/2" or 3/4" mats = $5-$8/sf) is expensive and has been known have odour issues which have caused breathing issues (which is the last thing you need when exercising). A cork floating floor clicks together = $2.29/sf - $4.50/sf...Just an option.
