Better Homes & Garden (bhg.com) has plans for studio/sheds. Among others they have the plans for the white sort of Victorian shed posted almost first. I haven't checked out any more info. I happened to be on their site about gardening & noticed a picture of the Victorian shed with plans. Just thought I'd pass it on...

Whilst I love the Victorian style she shed it may not suit my contemporary home. Thanks dogmum for the link but it led me elsewhere on the site & could not find...in saying that I can't help but think mine will have a lot of white for good lighting inside. There is only 3 metres or nearly 10 ft & length will be 4 metres or about 13 ft plus a little deck each side about 1.2 metres or 4 ft (hopefully covered)

Roof will be raked higher to the south with high windows for light above a wall of open shelving & a camp sink (no plumbing) plus I hope our old fireplace if hubs agrees . Behind the wall will be 2 water tanks we need to install for runoff from the car port roof directly in front & water for the studio This needs a retaining wall which I hope to also be the footings on that side.

East faces a side garden needing attention & west faces the kitchen window with a deck between that steps up a slope to the back which is where I want a little bridge to the studio. I have an old claw foot bath to install here & hope to make it a pond feature beside the bridge. To the north (sun in winter for southern hemisphere) is a garden bed & tree with no space to spare. Desk on this side with easel & chaise at the door facing the pond area....haha she dreams but she has a name for this place...The Sheayrie!

Sounds good in theory so will try drawing tomorrow & take some photos.

you see it has to have lots of sunshine, and i do not want others to see in. i am debating on the tub part, and how attached it needs to be but there must be an external sunny shower.

had one in the keys and it was glorious, showered every afternoon.

The direction where you're going for your she shed is going to be a perfect personal oasis. You're capturing the same essence as the Victorian one in your own style. It'll feel wonderful having a place that speaks to you in every way.

Love what you did with the painting supplies & your other ideas. I began making a small extra bedroom into a craft room. When it's time to think of organizing craft supplies will keep them in mind.

Getting ready to leave for southern Florida. Can't miss being with our grandson at his third b-day party. I'm terrified of flying & it puts a huge damper on going. I've flown countless number of times-from private 4-seater planes to Martha's Vineyard (we knew someone), through the Grand Canyon on 16 passenger plane, 747's to France, the Caribbean, blah, blah, blah. To name a few flights. To complicate my dread it bothers me leaving my fur babies. My pet sitter is wonderful & the dogs love her. Still I don't like not having them with me. I've got to snap out of it. Drugs....

Going to Ft. Lauderdale where my OS & OD & her family live. He lives a block in from the Ft. Lauderdale beach & she lives less than a mile away. They seem to follow each other & end up being in the same place. Love knowing they're so close & real friends. We did something right. Sitting @ airport with OH having a drink which isn't worth what we paid! There's a large tropical storm arriving tonite & headed mainly to the southern west coast & up towards Orlando & Tampa & into the Carolinas. Welcome to Hurricane season! The Governor has already declared a state of emergency. Hoping we won't experience turbulence. Yikes! We need to board soon.

HI ladies...sorry have been awol for a bit & missed some of your shenanigans of late!

Have a wonderful time in FL dogmom & hope you miss the bad weather!

She caves are so inspiring & awesome so trying to nut it all out ...I want so many different styles hmmmmm...have been helping MIL sort out her needs & busy social weekend soaking up lots of our time but fun too!

Do any of you have experience in housing an ageing parent? We have offered our home as an alternative to MIL instead of the stingy aged care offerings however she will become more dependant in the next couple of years so that is an issue...I have work today & tomorrow so just a quick catch up...Have a great day!

Maybe we should put up a poll about it all. I am not faced with that. tried to place hubby's parents in a really nice apt with cooked meals, and entertaining activities. was kinda like everybody loves raymond, they eventually got booted. but not after we gave up and left. the complaints were wide and varied. i forced them to eat butter, all natural chicken cordon bleu. he was not allowed to go to the front of the cafeteria line whenever he wanted. she felt that she should only have to sit and watch tv.

I would unwillingly do my mom, but she will not come here, and i will not go there.

if you found a place like where i sent my inlaws that would be nice. they start with full autonomy. a little spot to garden, a craft center, regular trips to places. their own little prebuilt home. amount of help involves further fees, everything from going to dinner to having laundry done, to checking on you. all the fees were adjustable, heck i would have gone there.

do you have a spot in your home? a nurse to help when needed?

    LouieT thanked havingfun

My mom is 82 years old and lives by herself in her own home. She suffered a series of small strokes just before Christmas of last year. She spent 3 weeks in hospital and it was determined that her short term memory was affected. My sisters and I decided that we would put her is assisted living when the new year rolled around. I offered that she could come and live with me as I have plenty of space and a perfect set up to give her virtually private living quarters. The only problem was that she would have to move about 3 hours away from the city she has lived in for the past 60 years. That didn't go over so well!

Once she got out of the hospital, we took her to tour some assisted living places....all very upscale....but the more she looked, the more adamant she became about staying put.

Long story short, she is currently still in her own home, a nurse comes in twice a day to give her an insulin shot, we all do our part in checking up on her....I have three sisters.

The only thing is that she feels her house and stuff is going to be such a problem for us when she dies that she spends most of her days taking her treasures to second hand or antique stores and selling them. She definitely doesn't need the money but it's what keeps her going. She fills her days with leisurely walks to the rapid transit, can spend a couple of hours riding it when she misses her stop and has to loop around. lol. Somehow, it gives her a sense of purpose. As long as she still remembers where she lives, we are going to let her continue on.

Her doctor feels that she should be in assisted living but has given us the okay for her to remain alone at home as long as we keep tabs on her. She has days where she can be very, very nasty to people and days where she is a sweet little old lady.

We are prepared to put her in a home, but it will definitely be as a last resort.

Louie, all that I can say is as long as your MIL can stay at home, let her. Talk to her now. See where she would like to be if she became totally incapable of looking after herself. Take her to tour these places now....get her feedback. Pay attention to the things she hates the least about them. Good luck.

yep, that is what makes the difference. do you have things like meals on wheels?

oh, I know another possible resource. local senior center. many independent people don't realise they exist.

    LouieT thanked havingfun

We do have meals on wheels but she is not using their service. The morning nurse and the evening nurse keep an eye on what my mom is eating. My mother hates that the nurses come twice a day but we explain to her that the only alternative is her moving into a home. That always settles her down. My mother can be quite feisty...she is fit as a fiddle for her age, but her memory and judgement are not always up to snuff.

The local senior resource centre has been very good. My mom has never used a computer, still has a rotary phone and can find doing business in this day and age challenging....she won't ask us for help. We just had a General Census that all citizens were required to complete, preferably on line. The resource centre helped my mom do hers. They also lined her up with a grass cutting service. We could have done these things for her but she gets a sense of satisfaction not asking us for help. We keep a close eye on her, but from afar.

She goes to a hairdresser once a week to get her hair washed and set. My younger sister used to pick her up and drive her there until we discovered "hair day" was a big event in her week. Catching the bus and then a short walk to the beauty shop and then a bus ride back filled in her day. Being driven there and back just meant more time at home with nothing to do. We no longer drive her there but have arranged a standing appointment with the hairdresser.

Because of her short memory, one of us will phone her in the morning, tell her it's "hair day" and she starts her planning. She has something to do that day.

We give her daily reminders every day as that is where she has problems. On Sunday or a holiday we will remind her that there is no newspaper delivery that day or else she will get on the phone and raise holy h ell with the delivery boy that she didn't get her paper. Lol

no, i just meant the meals on wheels for future reference. The other is like i have a few blocks away, you can play games exercise, i think they even have lunches. when my husband's grandmother was mentally failing, the routines were what was important. she lost it because they no longer let her take care of her aunt. it was the routines that kept her going. you are doing much the same with your mother. meals on wheels is just one more person to check on her. the senior centers offer classes, help her do things, locate assistance, make a circle of friends who check on each other.there are many little services that do not aggravate people as much and yet accomplish what is needed. as needs grow stronger, you might wish to look at a monitor. not that i can get my mom to use. it is like $15/month, she calls when she has a problem. they call appropriate people and talk to her till it is cared for.

HF, I am on the same page as you. I think it is really important to let the elderly remain independent, or think they are independent as long as possible. All the things you mention do that. We have found that doing too much for my mom can frustrate her.

Louie, this can be a really difficult thing to deal with. The other thing that you have to take into account is your MIL's personality. My mom has not had a huge circle of friends in her life and has been very much an introvert. I cannot see her doing well in group activities. On the other hand, my grand dad, when my grandma passed away, went into a seniors home and had a whale of a time! He used to play the piano and lead sing-a-longs in the rec room. He loved eating in a group cafeteria, he schmoozed with all the single ladies, uh uh oh,....he loved being looked after.

    LouieT thanked User

yep my mom is much the same way. every thing is a darn secret! Now that I have to deal with my son and his son. I can not be doing all that anymore. i wish she would accept who she is and quit trying to get everyone to see her in this magical light. We keep having dust ups and the only ones who care for her are me - the never wanted daughter and her exhusband-whom we shall not discuss.

I believe the ultimate bottom line is having elderly is never easy, no matter how perfect they may have been at one time. you can only console yourself with the fact you did the best you could and that they would have had no life otherwise.

Ah louie, no problem. I also want to give a little been there. JOT had a beautiful grandmother, she had even raised him in his later years. She felt more like his mother. Anyway, the whole family is upset over her either inabilities or not. So JOT and i decide that my son - quite small at the time, and i will take a trip to somewhere she has wanted to return to. involved more than one state - and suddenly i draw a blank. So off we go. That one on one time sold me. She would tell me one minute she was picking up the tab, the next minute she was loudly announcing that she had never said such a thing. Or who the ???? am i? At one point in the bathroom, she admitted that she had moments where she knew what was happening, but could not stop it and it scared her. So, even the sweetest can become downright scarey at this stage.

When i brought her home, we took her directly to the local university to check for geriatric problems. She was then diagnosed and family was given instructions. they were amazed and promptly refused to follow any of them.

I'm going through similar situations with my mom who'll be 97 in August. After selling her house 5 years ago she moved into independent living to be closer to me. She's always been an independent woman & doesn't like asking for help. I do all her food shopping, errands & medical visits, etc. . It's gotten much harder for her get around past 5 months. Past few weeks I've noticed a dramatic decline in her memory loss & cognitive changes. It's age appropriate but I feel it's important to be aware of these changes. My 2 brothers live out-of-state & feel they're out-of-touch with all that goes on. I've come to accept their very few visits. They are the ones who may have to live with regrets when it's too late. I'm now her proxy (originally it was my older brother) but my mom changed it. I'll do everything I can to keep her out of a nursing home. It's unfortunate our country doesn't do right by our elderly. It's proven keeping them at home is not only better but cheaper than a nursing home. The nursing home business is one of Washington DC's biggest lobbyists. I watched my aunt & uncle in a nursing home on the same grounds as my mom lives. I was their companion to take them for walks, play cards, etc. But no health aide stuff. If only people knew what goes on beyond the brochure. But that's for another day. I do give hints whenever I learn someone's relative is living in one though. I may be interviewed by a newspaper who did an article about nursing homes where my aunt & uncle lived. I have tons to say from what I observed....

heck, don't need to wait for that time. i have spoken with many and my time at a big city hospital is not unique. they kill you. not so much with abuse as with lack of sympathy, empathy, or any other human emotion.

And at Soc Sec, as much as i hate to say this, the person most likely for me to make them guardian, was someone who did not want the job.
