i met a very sweet lady on thursday, she gave me a beautiful rose. no, not a weed, but important all the same.

What kind of rose? Why did she give it to you?

Our wild Alberta roses have just started blooming. My driveway is lined with them. They smell beautiful.

I've got family up around Grand Prairie, but it's been longer than I care to think about since I've been there. Never got to see the wild roses.

I'm adapting to Australia and its flowers - had amazing kangaroo paws in my last house, and have got a nice grevillea growing now in the new one. I think it's in the wrong place, so I'm going to have to dig it up, but I'll enjoy the flowers for a bit before I do...

roxsy it was a lady we went to get iris's from. I think she is very special. she must be in her 60s and lives in the country near dover. old amish homestead. gosh, i miss the country.

gee, did not even know she was from up that way, only noted time she went out in that water, and this is even though there were signs around, including business signs advertising local croc watches.

so badger, is it proper or insensitive to say you are from gb? which brings to mind the question of the european union. is there a description that you are from there? my understanding is that folks don't like that either? please do not take insult, it is strictly an expiring mind?

HF, the UK is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Great Britain is England, Scotland and Wales.

Both my parents were born in England, as well as my oldest sister. I lived there pre-kindergarten. I know my parents weren't too happy if they were referred to as Europeans. Not sure about anything else.

now i did not know about the uk part, i thought it was interchangeable. and i know they are not europeans, but what are they? and you are right of course, i just did not do right, i know she is the queen.

I don't think Badger is from GB or the UK - I could be wrong, but I think he's from the Republic of Ireland, which belongs to neither.

Me, I was born in British Columbia, travelled a lot for work, met an Australian, and the rest, as they say, is history. I've been living here about 15 years now, first in Canberra, then the far south coast of New South Wales, now in Victoria.

My experience of Australia's deadly species (other than the drivers) is limited, fortunately. I have been up in the Daintree, where the lady was taken by a croc, and I've seen the salties there. No way I'd go into the water anywhere in that area! Our last house was in black snake territory - we had a few in our back yard because we backed onto bushland, but fortunately, they're not very aggressive, even though they are poisonous. Worst experience was my dog almost dying from a paralysis tick. I must admit to getting cautious about swimming in the open ocean these days, especially after a lady was taken by a shark about 20 km away from where we used to live. I generally stick to rock pools these days!

Jmm, I believe you are correct. An earlier post on this thread, Badger says he lives in Southern Ireland. I do believe that he was born in England.

My mother and sister and her family are still in BC so I do get back from time to time. Was last back about 2 years ago, and will likely be going back next year for Mom's birthday - she'll be 100 then! I haven't lived in BC, though, since I left university, more years ago than I care to think about!

I cannot and will not tell a lie. to get to hang out with such sophisticated travelers makes me feel so priviliged!

My international includes, international waters off the coast of florida, dozens of times. 2 trips to the edge of Canada - Waterfall and the far west. Bahamas once. I was the one picking you up.

I just went on a train trip to Prince Rupert, and I am flying to Victoria BC in September for a week. We are renting a car and touring the Island.(Our 40th wedding anniversary) :)

I would love to visit Australia. Hubby keeps saying we are going to do it one day. I think the furthest south I have been is the Panama Canal. (A bit too hot for me.)

,, then she would be right, Southern Ireland, or the Republic of Ireland, or EIRE,, it's all the same place,, in the time of the famine Ireland's population was somewhere around 8 million,, now it is still no where near that number, around 5 million including Northern Ireland, roughly 3 million up there and 2 million down here and we are by far the biggest land mass.

Absolutely no offence taken, no one in Britain would take offence at being called British,, unless they are ultra sensitive,, or that we live in the U.K (United Kingdom ) or G.B ( Great Britain ) and most would not bother about being called European, but there are some,, like me,, who although accept that we are in Europe, our root's are British, or U.K. / G.B. and most people here accept this, and I have no problems at all with this, but I love my traditions, and I was born in ENGLAND so I am English and proud of it, any forms I fill that ask if I am European or "other" I will always cross it out and put ENGLISH. So to answer your question, no I do not take offence in general conversation.

And yes I was born in ENGLAND and moved to Ireland in the year 2000.

And Northern Ireland, although detached from G.B. is ruled by the British but it is a small proportion of the ISLAND as a whole.

Tribble - which chat thread? I find some of the bigger threads (ie the US ones) just too hard to follow - too many comments, too many backstories that I don't (and don't want to) understand. A nice little Aussie chat thread would be good, but Koala seems to be dead and so this seems to be it. Perhaps you or someone on Houzz can set up an Aussie thread, with welcomes to international visitors?

Canada has an island just off the shore of Newfoundland and Labrador called Fogo Island. The Irish settled there in the late 1700's. It has retained much of its "Irishness."

I am fine with chatting here once in a while. A lot of threads morph into general chat long after the dilemma has been dealt with. I cannot see the harm in letting it continue.

My husband says he is an all american mutt, as am i. he would never use a kit. i really don't want him too, they might discover that touch of cro magnon in him. the touching eyebrows, the too big jaw. the head that fits in no hats. the organs that every doctor says are the largest they ever saw!

How you doing on water weight? that is what comes off the best? cut back on salt. no gassy foods - take gas x. now mind you the gas does not magically disappear, it does come out-you will now have burps worthy of a 12 yo boy with a rootbeer. what it does stop is bloating. Miralax uses water in the body to help the body get rid of excess waste. that is a thought, killing 2 birds with one stone.

If someone had asked me 5 years ago if i would have this wealth of knowledge on this subject, I might have slapped them, thinking they had lapsed into insanity!

What a fun gift to give someone! I did a bit of family tree history a few years back and my background is all Welsh and English. I would love to do a DNA test though to see exactly what is coursing through these veins though. Lol

I am not much help on quick (or slow) weight loss. The only thing that seems to work is eat less, move more. (Sometimes)

Oh, back to DNA....my daughter had her German Shepherd dog tested. Don't ask me why. Her OH gave her a pet test kit as a present. She was thrilled. Lol. Turns out the dog is just what they thought ....a German Shepherd. What were they looking for. A bit of royal Corgi or something? :)

I hope you have fun at the wedding. Don't let that silly ten pounds bother you.

Lmpo about the German Shepherd. Didn't really think there were any quick fixes for the extra 10 lbs. but read some reminders about it being a swap thread and that was the only thing I could come up with on the fly.

Nope. German Shepherds don't even come close in the dog world to having the DNA most closely related to the wolf. That honour is held by about a dozen ancient breeds like the Shih Tzu, Pekingese, and the Lhasa Apso.

I always point that out to my daughter when she laughs at my little Gus the Lhasa Fatso or Lhasa Yapso, depending on the situation, when she comments that I should get a REAL dog. LOL.
