What's the budget?

Refrigerator (cold chest); cooking (fire pit for marshmallows or gas barbecue for real food); sink (does not need to be connected to plumbing -- i.e. hose with bucket works).

When my family was building our summer cabin we had no money -- we were building a house when the opportunity arose to lease a lot in a national forest. While friends and family helped us build the cabin that is still in our family almost 60 years later, and while friends and family helped us build our new house, our "outdoor" cabin kitchen was a 1"x12" by 8 foot board on top of two stumps. We brought water from the lake, and had one electric outlet that we could use when it wasn't needed for the electric saw. The fire pit was at the lake, and our main source of cooking was an electric frying pan used for bacon, pancakes (after the bacon), burgers, and the like. I learned how to use a hand held beater, and, with my enthusiasm, and without electricity, how to make whipped cream into butter.

At home, now that we have remodeled the kitchen, we use the grill pan with the gas stove, and not the gas grill outside.

If I were to build an outdoor kitchen, it would start with a refrigerator for cold drinks. Then I would add a new grill, and a sink. I think that a drink well that doubles as a sink is a very good idea, especially if you are building a countertop out of cost-effective cement, but I think that a really good Coleman ice chest in a stand, is a better drink "well", especially if you don't have a refrigerator. For a party you need an ice machine indoors or purchased ice. One reason to build an outdoor kitchen is for cleaning fish or game. For this you need a really big sink -- a well -- that is connected to plumbing -- and, maybe the sewer, too, not just a septic tank. Pizza oven? I think it is more fun to figure out how to cook pizza over an open fire.

One more suggestion, if you can run natural gas to your grill do it. Nothing is more inconvenient than running out of propane during an event. I bit the bullet and ran the natural gas line, best splurge - I always have gas for the grill, fire pit, gas lights, etc.

What is the minimum you need for an outdoor kitchen? A grill and storage for utensils? We are doing a complete over hail of our backyard and are running gas lines for a firepit and kitchen (8ft. Long). Thanks.
