Our nursery is recommending an October Glory for our backyard. I was wondering if surface roots are really as much of a problem as I've read they are.

I've seen pics online of some that have a broader spread, and some that are more upright in form. Is there a way to choose one that will be a bit more upright? Or do you prune it to train it that way or what?
