When choosing a bracket for a shelf, desktop, mantel, or countertop, it often looks best when the bracket depth is 1 to 3 inches less than the overhang depth. Because the brackets are supporting the overhang, there are certain rules that should be followed:

- For stone (or similar) counters that are 2 cm thick or less, the maximum unsupported depth is 6".
- For stone (or similar) counters that are 3 cm thick or less, the maximum unsupported depth is 10".
As a rule, brackets should be spaced no farther than 16" apart.

For example, a 2 cm thick countertop that has a 15" overhang will require a minimum of a 9" deep bracket (15"- 9" bracket = 6" unsupported depth). A 3 cm thick stone top with the same 15" overhang would only need a minimum of a 5" deep bracket(15" – 5" bracket = 10" unsupported depth).
