There is but it's more of a guideline. If you like the look of your two vases, it's good. If you can add a shell or a candle to make it a group of 3, you might like it better.

The general rule of thumb is odd numbers 3 5 7 etc.

I've noticed there are lots of wonderful Houzz pics where a pair was used to accessorize a spot rather than a trio.
