I like to treat the island as one solid form. A wood dishwasher panel and paneling on the side and back would do it. I also think a power strip on the stove wall would not interrupt the very nice backplash.

IMO the backsplash does nothing for the space I think raised counters at islands are dated and what is the white beside the island that should have all been the same as the cabinets and I think this color of cabinets was already dated last year.

Designers are the experts. Clients need to be educated. This may be their dream kitchen, but designers need to show them dreams they didn't know they could have.

Hasn't the client ever asked for your opinion? Not just regarding their choices, but what other ideas you may have.

Clients certainly have and do, and there are many examples on our page of clients who let us run with ideas they didn't think of.

There are also those clients who want something less extravagant, or who don't have the larger budget, or, who only want to change a few things rather than do a full remodel or redesign. We certainly will do that for them, and feel it's important to display these jobs here as well because as much as we all like the $100k remodels, not everyone has that kind of a budget.

Finally, I know we have all had that one client who feels like all you're trying to do is upsell them, or, trying to make more work out of what they originally asked to have done. Sometimes it's only right to respect their wishes rather than push them into something that they didn't ask for and leave them feeling like they got taken advantage of after all is said and done.

I appreciate this much more professional response. Too many Houzz replies are just quick sound bites. Now we can have a conversation. I look forward to comments that have some tooth to them.

@Rosenhaus: I agree, it is sometimes hard to have a good discussion here on Houzz. It's all about hit and run comments to try and get as much interaction as possible in order to maintain relevance and continuously move up in the Houzz ranks. I will definitely try to have a better presence than that in the future, though.

I understand the rank system (pun intended). The number of jobs we might get is fewer than the possible learning experiences. I have 33 years experience and want to further kitchen design through my comments. Its not bragging or uppityness. It's do you see what I see? Am I off-the-wall, or doesn't what I see make any difference? If it doesn't, then design stagnates. See my portfolio.

Are my eyes playing tricks on me or is that island counter extending over the dishwasher and closing off that passage? It looks like a very strange design...

I wonder why raised counters at islands are considered dated, as one professional stated?

I have always like raised counters at islands as they can hide meal preparation, dirty dishes, etc. from the rest of the room.

I think the kitchen turned out GREAT! In fact, it is very similar in materials and colors as the kitchen my husband and I remodeled. There are so many trends out there; white kitchens, gray kitchens, stained wood kitchens etc. I come from a long line of real estate investors and have bought and sold a few houses myself, and in my opinion as a business owner "The Customer is Always Right". In an ideal situation, you can share ideas and hopefully collaborate on a project together with clients and designers alike.
