There are plenty of tricks to help increase the illusion of light in this room. As you already know bright colors can reflect and expand the limited light that is available. Another tactic to increase this trick is to set your window treatment higher than your windows, to make them look longer, and have more fabric in that color.

If you are willing to try a roller shade, there is an option to add a pelmet to the top, as a sturdier option for a valance. This pelmet will cover the barrel, to protect the fabric, and gives a more finished look. What do you think of these?

These pictures show a recessed fit, but if you decided to install them above the window, the fabric will be longer when drawn, and provide more color and brightness.
