How should i decorate the top of my antique sideboard?

This sideboard is currently in my living room. I can't seem to put the right kind of accessories on it to do it justice and make it a wow! It was my Grandmothers piece and I love it.

Love your piece! I believe that the mirror should hang vertically ,put a lovely simple lamp flanking it.You need to vary heights of any vases or photos ! Odd numbers work best ...fewer larger scale please the eye.Color of some sort..not in photos but in objects you love telling a story of you!
unfortunately the mirror isnt designed to be hung vertically. dont know if you can tell by the picture but it has an ornate top. i could buy another mirror but i hate to not use it. i would put it in the dining room but the console in there is too small for such a large mirror.
Oh, that's a shame, because it would be lovely above the console. But if it's too big... hard to tell from here, but I believe you. And the mirror that's currently above the console is probably too small to hang above the cabinet. Have you tried swapping them around? Although I don't expect it to be the right move it would be interesting to know.

Please post photos of your progress with decorating the cabinet. Love to see what you've done :-)

I'm not a designer but in my humble opinion I think the mirror is competing with the sideboard. I would replace it with something less ornate , like a silver frame or black one like in the post above. Then that nice black and glass lamp I spotted in one of your pics would go nicely on it too.
you are right the ornate mirror just isnt right with the side board. i will use the black one from the dining room and use something else over the dining room console. Maybe the floral pic that is on the side wall in the dining room? i'll figure it out.
Are you sure the mirror wouldn't go above the console or switch with the picture cause it would go lovely with your colors in there .
the mirror is almost the exact same length as the console table. my poor husband is getting tired of mving these heavy mirrors around!
Ha ha my husband feels his pain ! You're worth it I'm sure ! Just don't drop one :-/

I haven't read all the above but can tell that it involves the mirror. I use a rule of thumb that a piece above furniture should probably be no wider than 75% of the furniture's width. Vertical is what you need and a simpler wooden frame to match the simplicity of the country-style of your piece.

i will work on it this weekend and post new pictures when i m done. :)

Ceramic jars in different shapes and sizes and have you thought about decorative dishes above the Sideboard? Great piece of furniture. I love it.
oooooh, like the idea about decorative plates....maybe white & cream colored pates of different shapes & sizes.
Well, couldn't get the hubs to move the mirror just yet but i did change it up a bit.

I believe all groupings should be bottom heavy like a classic woman. Use smaller mirror or art that is taller and a little narrower. You definitely need a buffet style lamp. Lose the sliders and I would use a collection of like items, probably 3 things. Yes, it is a beautiful piece:)

maggie, I am going to be the only one to say that I don't think the mirror is the problem. No, it is not the same style as the sideboard, but it appears that your taste is eclectic. I think that the problem is that youhaven't found the right "stuff" to put on the sideboard. The latest arrangement lacks any color and that makes it just kind of dull. Have you tried moving that lamp that is one the small table to the right up onto the sidebaord? Maybe place it on the left and in the middle have a low stack of books or a wooden bowl with some granny smith apples (Invest in some good "faux" ones from Walmart.)On the right side, A dinner sized plate on a plate stand, in a color from the rest of the room, to tie it together. If that is still not "enough" add some small silver pieces like on of the inspiration pics someone posted, or a small box or a conch shell or something not too large that interests you. Try not to put items that are all the same height. Nor so you want the movement in height to go from high to low. High to low to high again is fine though.

Trim the round pads underneath the feet of the bureau so they don't show...

The rectangular mirror doesn't really work with this piece which is nice....I'd go for a rustic round mirror of some sort, around 36-40" round.

She is asking what to put on the sideboard.

the little fluffy "slippers" are definitely going :) - I have them on because I m still not sure whether to keep the piece in the living room or move it to the dining room. i really appreciate the feedback and u are right i just havent found the right things. But i will keep trying until i find something. one thing i dont like is a cluttered look, i would rather have one or 2 great pieces than a lot of filler things. Although i do love a pretty vignette of sentimental items. My living room is black and cream and thats why i went with all cream accessories. The room also has touches of green. The hunt is still on!! Thanks everyone!

I love the chest and the mirror! I think two ornate gold, beaded shades, buffet lamps would be beautiful on each side of the mirrror. In the middle, add a medium size ceramic bowl with some spheres in it. Also if you feel like painting, I would paint the top half of the wall a darker color. It will make the chest and mirror pop! Please post results.

    thanks!

I restyled - how's this? Am I more on track? One thing I have is accessories, :)
i like this better - not so cluttered looking
  • 13 years ago
Both the mirror and the chest are beautiful. The mirror is more delicate and the chest more substantial and are competing to my eye. Sorry. I think the big picture leaned against the wall is a perfect arrangement. It adds color and interest without competing. It puts the chest to work. It has a reason.
The only thing I don't like is that the picture leaning and the silhouette are too close in size. I like the size of the next smaller art from the first arrangement. But otherwise, I like it a lot!

hi sharpkel! i m working with hubby to get the mirror changed out. You know how they can be...

I agree with most all the comments here. I would remove the flowers on the floor as well.
here are pictures of the rest of the room
  • 13 years ago
I like your room and your cabinet as they are (now). The lamp you've changed makes so much difference. Thumbs up!
or use this black lamp...oh no I am obsessing....OCD is in high gear
  • 13 years ago
I think if you remove the vase you've nailed it . The vase and flowers just make it busy . If it feels bare when you move it just add another picture frame .
that vase is gone - it was just on the floor until I could put it away.
ok two last pictures...one with a clock and one without. I'll post other pics after i get another mirror. I just want to thank all of you so much for your feedback! This is so much fun. It was a rainy day here so it was perfect for dragging all my accessories out and staging the sideboard. Thank you so much !!! :)
Can you try one more look? Push the vase all the way to the left and to the back and push the clock to the left with just the edge overlapping in front of the vase, leaving the middle empty.
First, I commend you for "shopping" your house first to accessorize your lovely sideboard.

I agree with earlier comments that the flowers are just too busy. Here's a suggestion: Lamp on the left, frames on the right, clock next to the lamp. I'll suggest a different lampshade for the lamp, something a with a contemporary shape and a little more color. You can probably find something very suitable at any big box store.
Handyman here is a pic with the clock moved over by the vase.
I think I would like that with the clock pulled just a bit more toward center. Just the low edge in front of the vase. I like the way there is height at both ends without being matched and balanced weight. But what do you think?
Of I can get hubby to move the mirror, would the mirror below be too bedroom looking for over the sideboard? It is a darker wood, but it was also my grandmothers.
But it looks so beautiful with that dresser! Was that your grandmother's too? I love it!
That was my aunts and thanks I love it too. Several people have said to paint it with the Annie Sloan chalk paint but I don't want to! I think the mirror is a bit too tall for the chest of drawers. The chest is so tall & I m so short that I can barely see in the mirror :)
I may be one of the only ones who loves the gold mirror over your sideboard. To me, they compliment each other in form and play off each other in style. I also really like your next-to-last picture with the clock. Maybe slide the clock a little to the left, but I don't prefer it angled in front of the vase in your last pic.
I un-angled the clock - my husband has been watching me all day and he is giggling at me. He thinks I m cwazy.
Damn I was hoping you wouldn't notice that! LOL

You have a beautiful sideboard, and keep the mirror. I also believe less is more, possibly limiting to around 3 or 5 asymmetrically placed objects of varying heights, with one of them being a tallish table lamp, maybe one beautiful ornate frame with photo and then one lower object. I've attached photos of a few similar pieces from my various projects.

I would add a little bit of colour to the arrangement...you said you have some green also in the room along with black and white? Now that you have an arrangement you can live with, you have time to search for just the right peice of green coloured vase or bowl to take the place of the present vase. A really large opaque green glass vase or apothacary jar would look great!
