To paint or not to paint cabinets...

We chose this blonde grey porcelain plank tile. I am of the opinion that it won't look good with the honey color cabinets the house has, and was considering painting then ivory for a more seamless look and staining the island charcoal or dark brown. My husband, mother in law and contractor think I am insane and that the quality wood cabinetry should not be touched. It's only 4 years old. The contractor says it will require upkeep and not be as nice, and to wait until the tile is down and I might be surprised and love it. I agree with him there...i guess. I want more opinions though. Does this clash? No one has asked the question, why didn't you choose a floor that matched to begin with, but I looked everywhere and this is the only tile I fell in love with.

I think there is a better option for the floor. I don't think you should paint those cabinets they are nice and if you paint them you will be dealing with paint chips down the road.

Wait til your floor is in..cabs and floor do conflict in photos...the countertop backsplash and floor are cool shades...cabs are warm...de-clutter counters and observe colors in all different lights of the day to be sure...if you paint choose a cool color ..a little more color than white may be more modern

In the photos the floors do have a suggestion of warmth in the tone...this is why I would wait to decide

I agree with you that the floor and cabs don't blend well. Painted cabs are high maintenance; you could have them refinished instead.

The cabinet color works with your counters and backsplash. I think you will be disappointed if you paint them cream. I would look for another floor option before painting the existing cabinets.

That pink flooring is problematic. It needs to go. It doesn't work with anything shown in your house.

I'm painting my cabinets, although they're not as new as yours. I think a cream color with a glaze would tie them together with the floor and also with your idea of a darker island.

I would find a different tile. There are porcelain planks in the shade of your original tile which looks fine to me. The grey will scream early teens in a few years.
Yes cream cabinets would be better with the new tile but it would have a higher contrast with countertops and back splash. You would have the expense and work of painting to create another clash and a chipping problem. Easier to switch tile.

How about light gray cabinets? They would look great with your existing counters and backsplashes as well as the new floor. Change the switch plates to black or stainless. Natural wood cabinets are NOT sacred just be cause they are wood. Paint them if you like.

The cabinets are nice. It's the current floor and the one you are thinking of (the one you like) that don't go together. It's possible to just change the flooring to something that goes better with the cabinet color. I think you just don't like the cabinet color--if that's the case you should change it too. Nothing will change that dislike except to change them by painting them.

I see how you're trying to complement the backsplash with the new floor. I can't tell if the floor I suggested would go with that or not??

Is the house or kitchen four years old? Why are you considering changing things? Is this a new purchase and you don't like the finishes?
A kitchen has five elements, floor, counters, cabinets, backsplash and walls. You have beautiful warm cabinets that don't appear to go with your floor or backsplash. Keep the cabinets and choose a floor that goes with your warm cabinets. A designer may be very helpful at this point to prevent you making a very expensive design mistake that you may not be happy with. A kitchen is the most used room in the home and you will have to live with your choices for a long time.

I agree, keep the cabinet stain, keep the floor or find something that is not grey....this does not go and will be dated very quickly

The flooring must be changed to a blinder tone, as suggested. The cabinets are beautiful. And I like the tile. What will help here is under cabinet lighting & paint color. I'd go for SW FAVORITE TAN. And de clutter the clutter.

And get better color for your outlet color to blend in with tile. There's too much contrast with white.

It would be ashamed to paint those cabinets, I think a medium walnut tone

tiles would blend everything together. I don't think you need to fall in love

with your flooring, you need it to support the existing décor.

We have the same floor and cabinet color. I wouldn't change it.

I'm not liking the two together. The cabinets seem very red and don't complement the weathered grey flooring. Waiting until both are installed can't hurt though... There are also those who believe wood is precious and painting wood is a major sin, but you should be happy with your final product even if it means painting the cabinets. Wood is not precious!
