This depends on your soil. When I lived out West I only added some organic material to the loamy, sandy soil. Now I live in the Midwest and deal with heavy clay - very little of that clay becomes part of the mixture in my rose hole now. So, yes, I agree - you will get 100 answers due to various soil conditions. However - you will be rewarded in the end by investing some money in organic amendments (blood meal, bone meal, cottonseed meal) and compost. I have had the most success with bareroot roses by following the recommendations from this ARS article:
