Wow, but I like that table Grover posted! 1st one., well both actually, but Noguchi one looks skimpy, unless you could get it larger. But so far... I'm favoring a square.

Groveraxle, what would the glass one I posted look like? I'm curious.

Measurements

Height. The proper height for a coffee table is the same height as the cushions on your sofa or 1-2 inches lower.

Length. A coffee table should be approximately two-thirds the length of your sofa.

Placement. There should be between 12-18 inches of space between a coffee table and the seating surrounding it.

I like Grover's idea to have a table for the sofas only. Then, give the two accent chair a table in between. That way, you'll have a beverage spot for everyone but not overwhelm the space with a HUGE cocktail table. I'd rather have lots of room and visual square footage.

What about two smaller ones in the wood you want instead of one big one? Then you'd have some open space in-between for a more open look.

Willow, unless a table is oriented correctly, the best I can do is plunk it in the room. Here it is plunked. I gotta say, though, I wouldn't want to keep this clean.

Haha... Thanks for plunkin' it there Grover! I like it, but I think it'd need to have two side by side to make a larger square, definitely not big enough, not my room though;).. Could see a couple ottomans tucked underneath two of them. Where were you during my dining musical chair dilemma? Love your photoshop work, so helpful!

The other table I considered was a glass table, the Barcelona Table, but it's only 40 inches wide and I think glass could make the room look icy rather than warm and inviting (everything is white, gray, taupe, cream) . The table you see in the background is a gray glass so was trying to stay away from more glass in this room.

I love this table and I'm still trying to figure out how to fit it somewhere in my house.

Use the Barcelona Table, but offset the position.

thanks ,Beverly. The ceiling is cofferred and it's a perfect square which seems to ask for symmetry in the room. When I get home today I'm going to post a photo of my ceiling and fireplace (the side of the room you can't see in the photo). Both seem to ask for a square in the middle of the room but I would like your opinion

I agree space does seem to want a square. And yes, another vote for the chairs having their own table.

Go with the table you like after you figure out the size. I think there are many great possibilities, but you seem to know the look you want. Fill us in after you get it! ;)

You're correct, coffers dictate the symmetry.

See what I mean? There's a square centered in the ceiling over the space for the coffee table.

Chiming in late but wondering if you ever placed the sofas across from each other? Without seeing the rest of the room it's hard to say if this works or not.

Ok. Duh. Just saw the above picture and think you should try the sofas across from each other. This could tighten up the conversation area and provide the symmetry the space calls for. Just a thought.

Agree with sofas opposite each other. That conversation area is massive.

Oh beautiful room! After seeing the whole picture, agree, sofas facing each other and chairs facing fireplace in between sofa ends. After seeing this, I see a large square table and yes, warm it up, as you said you wanted to do.

I like your ceiling fan, don't prefer them, but this ones nice looking, nice color. Do you have a source fot it?

I would vote for an upholstered coffee table with a pattern, square with nice legs (maybe turned) and small table between the chairs, just enough to be usable, but make your coffee table the focus.

My original plan was to have the sofas facing each other but when I put the chairs facing the fire place and looked at the room from the front it looked like too much metal and too many chairs (notice my island stools- metal)

It just didn't feel right in the room, although I imagined it would.

It's funny though. When I look at the posted photos I feel the sofas should be across from each other but in if feels different when standing in the room.

Deciding to go with the following table

It's hard to tell but the finish is very light with nice hues of gray.

now the question is how tall? I love low tables but I don't want it to look weird.

I'm thinking of 14.5 inches (sofa seat height is 17, although tear sheet says seat height is 18; the gray chairs in the room have seat height of 18) I made cardboard cut outs and although the rules say it should be no shorter than 16 given my seat heights, the low just feels really good.

any advice? This table is expensive and I want to avoid making a very expensive mistake.

What do you think of my table selection for my space (photos at start of post)?

I made cardboard tables and liked the 14.5 bur my cardboard was lopsided so hard to get a true feel.

I like your table choice and if you're going to have it pretty much fill the center, I think going low is a good idea. It will still allow the room to feel fairly open.

If the 14.5 felt like it would be functional for setting your drinks, I'd go for it. Finally, if it's being custom made and it ends up really feeling off, it looks like it could be shortened fairly easily (though not made taller).

Ok. This is crazy. I still don't have a coffee table.

It's sooo hard to find the right combo of dimensions, style, finish. The custom did not work out as they could not guarantee the finish. ( I was not excited about paying over 3K for a table with no guaranteed finish)

Anyway, I love this RH table.

Please send your comments on style and which finsih The darker one is a deep dark chocolate with a hint of grey. Dimensions: 55 X 55 X 12.25 (really short) (My sofa seat height is 17)

Thanks for dropping the table into my photo! That's the rectangular version. I'm getting ready to order the square version: 55 X 55 X 12.

It's pretty short, but I'm going for the more open, European feel.

What's your opinion on the table height?

Sofa seats are 17 inches. Table is 12 inches. I know it breaks the rules.

As long as you are aware of the distinct height difference, that's half the battle. What will be the main use of this particular room/table. Is this mostly an entertaining space? (i.e. serving appetizers etc for lots of people?) A coffee table height should be about 1-2 inches lower than your sofa seat. That rule came about so that it is easy for guests to set down a plate or cut cheese from an appetizer plate.

All that being said, if you LOVE that look and are willing to put up with some awkward reaches at your next cocktail party, then go for it.

It's like when my wife wistfully looks at shoes with 4 inch heels....she is sure they will look incredible with whatever dress she is thinking of...until she has to wear them for an entire event! Then buyer's regret sinks in.

So just think about how you will use it and make your decision based on that. But I still say-very beautiful table.

Thanks again. It's going to be a table mainly for creating a feel in the space. I plan to put a nice big bowl in the center.

There won't be any eating in this room. I have another space for eating and socializing. The cream sofas and light rug have made it a "No food zone."

I didn't really think that one through, just went for what I love looking at. No one wants to sit down in this room so I end up just enjoying it myself.

Mainly, it will be for sitting and talking and maybe occasional tea.

You are so right about the awkward reaching. The room for guests and cocktails will have a more normal seat height - to table top relationship.

Each sofa needs an end table, and there should be a table between the chairs. Each sitter should have a CONVENIENT place to set something down. Put a round or oval ottoman (with concealed wheels) in the central space. Add table lamps as well, both for reading and eliminating the gloom of an unlit ceiling.

Ok. So I finally bought a coffee table! I love the size, shape, and style, but I think it might be a little too dark. I have 30 days to return it. Please ignore the little bowl. It's all I have for now but would get something much larger.

Not too dark. It is seriously perfect! Get Ikea's Stockholm bowl to put in the center.
