Your question raises another one. Why do you need feather meal in particular? Just curious.

Feather meal is an excellent, relatively high N organic fertilizer (13-0-0).

Not local but a mail order source with a decent price.

I'm not sure that feather meal would be considered organic and maybe not safe to use.

Commercially raised poultry are highly medicated and the chemicals are recovered in the feathers. Arsenic is just one of the chemicals found in tests of feather meal.

Do your research carefully before adding something like this to your gardens.

GG, I realise that, I just wondered why it had to be feather meal and not something more easily obtained in the OP's area. I was thinking that possibly the OP has read something stipulating feather meal and doesn't realise there are alternatives.

I mentioned it because feather meal is the highest source of organic N, which most other organic products cannot supply to that degree. Blood meal comes close but it is a much faster acting N source and with an ability to 'burn' plant roots. Even alfalfa meal can have this fast acting ability to damage roots. Feather meal is quite slow acting so releases N over an extended period of time - 6-9 months - and is perfectly safe to use around delicate feeder roots

btw, many brands of feather meal are OMRI approved and certified organic.

I want feather meal as a slow release fert for a first year melon patch I'm starting. All I've added is a bunch of compost and some cottonseed meal. Ill probably use more cottonseed meal if theres nothing better but I'd love some suggestion for amending clay soil for melons, also, I was thinking about adding decomposed granite and/or expanded shale. Thoughts?
