I would go with the assumption that the compressor needs replacing. The freon lines were probably ruptured at some point and caused contamination in the whole system.

That's pretty much what I figured. Any ideas what I could do with it? Maybe put it on Craigslist AS-IS for $50? I have no idea what scrap is worth.

I disagree with the advice given...get the model number, brand,age of outside condenser....call an authorized dealer and schedule a service call to come out and survey the situation...otherwise, everyone is just guessing whether condenser can be saved or not...

It is very possible and depends on if the fire was hot enough to bust the lines. The warranty situation is also something to factor in. If you replace both units- which would be the safest bet- you can get a new warranty. If you only replace the one, the warranty will be limited.

Tiger has it right,you can be out a bundle in labor then wind up with nothing. If you plan diy,try this. Simply depress a shreader to see if unit remain's sealed,holding pressure. If system is less than 5 years old and holding pressure and you can diy a new air handler/evap coil,it's worth the gamble. I would test for acid on the outside chance oil was heated to point of breaking down. If it work's right for two days,chances are the unit will give you several more years service.
