Help! Ugly Kitchen Ceiling Square Needing Facelift!

Hi, I would so appreciate any ideas updating this kitchen ceiling square (4 ft. X 4 ft.) cutout initially housing ceiling fan and fluorescent lighting. It's currently a major source of lighting, so thinking LED behind crown moulding and center light fixture? Cool ceiling fan? Stuck.....ideas desperately needed! Thanks!
