Won't kill 'em and they should come up assuming it is a variety that had come up in prev years. Some simply don't return but it won't be b/c of chips.

Did you mean 3-4 inches (")? I have daffodils that came up through a few inches of wood chips.

The load is too heavy for those leaves to peak through. It is possible but I don't know for sure as I've never piled 3-4' of anything on daffies--but it is possible they go dormant and re-emerge when load is lifted. That is the wonderful thing about bulbs, you plant, forget about how them, and they show up as beautiful surprises (or maybe not).

1. If it really is 3 - 4 feet the daffs will die. It's not so much the weight but the depth. They will try to come up but they cannot produce a stem more than 3 feet tall in order to reach the light from the energy stored in their bulbs .

2. They will not skip a year. If they don't come up one year they're dead. If you shift the pile right now they might come up since it is still quite early but they won't survive a whole season without seeing the light. They will try to grow but will exhaust themselves in the attempt.

Floral, some of my daffs DO skip a year. I have dug thinking I had clear land only to find firm bulbs that for unexplained reasons did not perform the prev year. Doesn't happen often but it does happen. Same with hippeastrum.

When I say 'skip a year' I mean that nothing at all grows, not even leaves. My understanding is that daffodil bulbs cannot survive in a dormant state without any foliage through a full year in the ground. Perhaps it is possible in a climate with very dry summer weather. Is yours like that? In my garden a bulb that wasn't growing in the summer would be rotting.
